4-star Key Quests

4-star Quests

We’re getting serious now. There’s going to be more multi-monster quests in this section, most every quest is going to be unstable if it involves gathering, and generally speaking the difficulty is ramping up quickly. I highly suggest you upgrade your armor and weapons as often as possible, perhaps even jump online and begin working through Low Rank of online to help aid your progress. You should by now be ready for 1* and 2* quests at the very least.

As usual we’re going to start with the important quests, in this section, and then work our way down in subsequent sections!

Wrath of the Rathian

Objective: Hunt a Rathian

Location: Verdant Hills

Subquest: Wound Rathian’s head

Notes: One of the two flagship monsters of the franchise, Rathian is the female of the species (Rathalos is the male and will be fought later) and prefers to fight on land. Be sure to bring Antidotes because her tail is poisonous and she will frequently backflip to slap you with it! When in the air, throw a Flash Bomb in front of her range of sight to bring her crashing down, or damage her enough. Rathian awaits you in area 5.

Hungry Eyes

Objective: Hunt a Nargacuga

Location: Misty Peaks

Subquest: Wound Nargacuga’s wings

Notes: Nargacuga is the flagship monster of Portable 3rd and is definitely doesn’t remind anybody of Batman. Fast and furious, beware her Swiss Army Knife tail, which in rage mode she will use to tailslam the ground, sending you flying. Her wings are extremely durable and will bounce most weapons. Either bring something that has attacks that cannot bounce, or be a Gunner. Head to area 6 to meet your match.

Completion of the quest will unlock the quest “Wyvern of the Wind”.

Serpentine Samba

Objective: Hunt a Najarala

Location: Marshlands

Subquest: Deliver 1 Wyvern Tear

Notes: Najarala is a Snake Wyvern and loves to twist and turn as its slithers and will often use its length to whip you or smack you from afar. Plus it uses the sounders (its giant head frill) to amplify its roar, and it can shoot scales, then blow them up to send you flying and stun you at the same time! When it begins to try and coil around you, get out if you can, or else be blasted from below. Najarala starts in area 6.

Completion of this quest unlocks “Noise Violation” and the Arena quest “Grudge Match: Najarala”.

Lurkin in the Murk

Objective: Hunt 2 Khezu

Location: Arctic Ridge

Subquest: Deliver 1 Wyvern Tear

Notes: If you didn’t do the 3* Quest “The Shadow in the Mountains” then now is your chance to meet not one, but two Khezu! Be sure to bring Dung Bombs! Don’t be weak to Thunder.

Crustacean Infatuation

Objective: Capture a Shogun Ceanataur

Location: Volcano

Subquest: Deliver 3 Carapaceon Brains

Notes: This is a capture quest. So make sure you don’t kill this new monster, Shogun Ceanataur, or else you’ll fail. The armor skill Capture Guru can aid you here. Shogun Ceanataur starts in area 6. Unlike Daimyo Hermitaur, Shogun Ceanataur can inflict Bleeding , a rather difficult status ailment that will deplete your HP the more you move. Crouch for a few seconds, eat a Mosswine Steak, or eat a Well-done Steak to alleviate Bleeding. Or, even better, try to avoid those sharp claws in the first place. Bring Cool Drinks!

After you have completed these key quests, your next Urgent Quest will show you the way to further greatness!

URGENT: The Dark Age

Objective: Hunt a Yian Garuga

Location: Jurassic Frontier

Subquest: Deliver 1 Wyvern Tear

Notes: Yian Garuga is a Bird Wyvern but don’t let that make you complacent. Treat Yian Garuga as carefully as you did Rathian, as he borrows many of her moves, complete with his own version of the poisonous backflip. If you want to trap Yian Garuga for whatever reason, don’t use Pitfall Traps—he’s clever and will avoid them. Beware in particular the combo attack where Yian Garuga emits a sonic roar, causing you to flinch, and then dives in to backflip you before you can get out of the way!

Completion of this quest will unlock the 5-star quest tier and the use of the Melding Pot from Maximeld in Kokoto Village.
