Pokemon can be afflicted by a variety of status afflictions during battle. Most of the time, status afflictions are caused by a Pokemon's moves, whether as a primary or secondary effect; for example, the move Thunder Wave causes paralysis.

As you might expect, status afflictions negatively affect the Pokemon and can potentially even cripple their performance. However, just like they can be caused, afflictions can be cured, by using certain items, by playing in Pokemon Refresh or by paying a visit to a friendly Pokemon Centre.
