Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness

Headstone of Repose

By
Jarrod Garripoli

Upon vanquishing the other four bosses, the teleporter to the north is now active and will bring you to this area. Unlike the others, there is no labyrinth to conquer before you get to the boss room, as the boss will be in the room just beyond the teleporter used to get here.

BOSS - Daril

Oh boy, this is definitely the toughest boss you have faced thus far, as not only is Daril relentless with his attacks, but it is also possible for your characters to die instantly from his one attack. Being the teacher of Fidel, you should come to expect that Daril knows some of the same skills that you do. If you thought Spicule was annoying, then you’re in for a real surprise whenever Daril opens up his onslaught with Ethereal Blast, which you know is Fidel’s Reserve Rush.

This will likely kill everyone at the beginning, since they are all grouped together, unless you immediately move away from the blast. Outside of that particular maneuver, Daril also has Air Raid, which is probably next in line as far as damage goes, but not anywhere near as bad as Etheral Blast. Abyssal Gate will probably only hit the single character it targets, so you should be pretty okay there. Outside of those, all that he has left are normal attacks.

While it’s possible to defeat him without the following strategy, the easiest way to win is to utilize the Dead Man Walking role on Miki. What this role does is make it so you are constantly taking damage, but you are completely invincible to all attacks and do not flinch when being hit. Putting this on Miki and taking manual control of her will ensure that the battle goes smoothly, although it might take a good while to whittle down Daril’s health.

So, you will want to put that role on Miki, along with Sage for the reduced casting time, then just spam Faerie Star/Light and Resurrection when needed. You can equip Warrior Slayer on someone else, preferably your strongest attacker for the 50% increase in damage, since Miki will be doing nothing but healing and won’t be taking any damage from Daril’s attacks. Make sure you keep your own health topped off, as it will be draining whomever has Dead Man Walking equipped (if you decide to use it on someone else).

Without Dead Man Walking

If you don’t feel like using Dead Man Walking, you will need to do some augmenting to get to a point where Ethereal Blast isn’t kicking your butt. To do this, you’ll need to craft Dojikiri-Yasutsuna, which are swords you can craft from level 7 in Smithery. It requires Meteorite x3, Coal x4, and Bloodstained Cloth x2. The point of making these is that when you augment it to a piece of armor, it grants you -10% damage to humanoids. All of the items are easily farmable from enemies, so you don’t have to worry too much.

Getting four of these on each character’s armor will help a lot in reducing the damage from Daril, even though Ethereal Blast could still kill some of your members who have lower HP. It might also be a good idea to craft some Smoke Bombs, as they can inflict Fog on Daril (Shotgun Blast can also do it). Although that won’t help with the AoE of Ethereal Blast, it will still help with his other skills. Combine this with Roles that make him focus on a single party member, like Victor with his high HP (and maxed Warrior Slayer), as well as Roles that reduce aggro/hate on your more prominent characters, like Skulker or Assassin.

Depending on how many Orichalcum you’ve gotten from the other bosses, it actually might be a good idea to synthesize one of those into a Moonstone to try and create an ultimate weapon. The best candidate for this is Emmerson’s weapon, as he is a ranged character and will be out of harm’s way most of the time, especially if you control him yourself. A good thing to do is equip Fiore with Thunder Flare, as it has a chance to lower the enemy’s attack. Basically, it all boils down to whether Daril acts like he’s out to kill you and spams Ethereal Blast or not.
