10 - The Checkup of Doom

By
Jarrod Garripoli

With the last battle against Tarantutor, Whisper is worried about the appearance of Yokai even he doesn’t know, so he suggests that you go and ask a teacher at your school about it. Warp to the school and go to the teacher’s lounge, where you can talk to Mr. Barton about any strange happenings. He mentions something about an “all-seeing crystal ball” at Shoten Temple, so that will be your next stop. When you get there, inspect the crystal ball on the ground to find out it is really a Yokai named Draggie! Unfortunately, in order to help you out, Draggie wants a Sawtooth Stag, which you can find on trees on Mt. Wildwood. Bring one back and he’ll give you his Yokai medal, as well as show you Nocturne Hospital.

If you’ve never been inside of Nocturne Hospital, there will be a Rank A Watch Lock at the front door, so get rid of it and head inside.

Shogunyan (left) is a very powerful Yokai. The hospital entrance is guarded by a Rank A Watch Lock (right).

Nocturne Hospital

Encountered Yokai
Alloo, Appak, Betterfly, Casanuva, Compunzer, Cuttincheez, Komiger, Mircle, Nul, Skranny (Yokai Spot; Rare)

Nocturne Hospital is divided into three floors, but there are some sections that cannot be access via normal means. Activate the Mirapo before anything else, then return outside and go on the west side of the building to find a vine that allows you to climb up to the third floor. You will find nothing but a chest up here, which contains a Bye, Li’l Angel book. Return outside via the same vine and go into the main entrance. You’ll run into a Leadoni, who is the clinic’s receptionist and directs you to Examination Room 1, which is on this floor. Before you head in there, you should see a yellow chest behind the counter ahead of you, so go open it to find A Serious Life book.

Actually, it’s probably a good idea to rob the entire building of its chests before going into the exam room, so go into the room to the left of the exam room and you’ll find two chests here ( VoltXtreme and Mighty Medicine ). There will be four rooms on the north end of this floor, so go into the second from the left to find the next chest ( Plain Ring ). Now, head all the way to the right to find the stairs leading to the second floor. You will find two ways to proceed here, west and south. For now, go west and into the first room you can to find two chests in the adjacent room that you couldn’t get into before ( Blank Charm and Curry Bread ).

Go all the way west and to the dead end, going through the door and into the northwest corner room for a chest ( Silver Doll ). Venture south from that room and into the room at the bottom, where you’ll find a chest ( Large Exporb ) at the north end, as well as a destroyed wall where you can jump down to the first floor (not needed now). Return all the way back to the stairs that brought you to this floor and go south this time. Entering the first room at the bottom will yield another chest ( Dancing Star ). Remember the room jutting out the bottom, as you will return to it shortly. Go all the way to the left now to find one last chest on this floor, containing a Green Coin .

In that room jutting out of the bottom is a vine that you can use to climb to the other section of the third floor. There’s only one other chest here (you should have gotten the other from the vine outside), which contains a Purple Coin . That is all of the treasures, sans one, in the building, so return to the first floor and enter the exam room. Beyond the room is a little area with some plants, where there is a chest on the right side that contains a Soul Secrets book. Talk to the Leadoni in the exam room and agree to have your height measured (stand normally). After this is an eye test in the northern part of the floor, then an X-Ray on the second floor. There will be a visit to the director on the second floor, then you will need to go back to the first floor and lay on hospital bed, bringing you to a boss!

BOSS - Dr. Maddiman

Maddiman is a boss that can be tricky to figure out at first, as he only has one target to hit at first. As you fight him, you will notice that hearts will pop up in the background behind him after he performs certain moves. These are Soul Absorb , which will drain your Yokai of their entire Soul Meter, and A Change of Heart , a move that inspirits a single Yokai and may cause them to attack their allies or themself. As you deal damage to the boss, it may use Blood Refill if it has hearts in the background, causing him to recover some of his loss HP.

Keep an eye out for the hearts in the background (left). His Soultimate can poison your front row (right).

Thus, it’s important to get rid of those hearts, which you can do by simply pinning a target on them; you don’t even have to attack them, as they will simply disappear from the pin. As for his other attacks, he has a physical one that hits you entire front row. His Soultimate Attack, Get Well DOOM! , hits your entire front row for damage and it will also inspirit (poison) them. Note that you can actually stun the boss by leaving one heart “alive” and when he is charging Blood Refill, pop it. Keep the boss from healing and he’ll go down in no time.

After the battle, you will learn of some bad news and then the chapter will come to an end.
