Very early on you're given the opportunity to rebuild your home town and in doing so unlock a whole range of items and exclusive power-ups not available any other way. By tapping the house/tree icon on the left-hand lower-screen sub-menu; you'll enter the screen where you can rebuild both shops and access to other parts of the town's map.
How it Works
Each building (or broken access point) requires a certain amount of time to repair. You need villagers to help you repair them and you start off with one ( out of a potential maximum of 999 villagers ). The more villagers you tell to rebuild a particular shop/point the less time it will take (more on the exact timescales a bit further down).
The time taken is also calculated in real-time! This means that 1 minute in-game means a real-life 60 seconds needs to pass before the building work is finished. Fret not though; as this happens constantly as long as:
You're playing the game normally or, You keep the game running but ; you put your 3DS into sleep mode .
How to Get Extra Villagers
With the longest areas/shop levels taking a scary 99 hours to rebuild; it's clearly a wise idea to increase your villager count as soon as you possibly can. The old adage of 'many hands make light work' stands true here, so take a look below at the three ways you can increase population Norende Town.
Via the Internet: For those with very few 3DS friends, this allows you to add some extra villagers by scouring the current database of Bravely Players. Note that you can only chose this options once every 24 hours! Via Your Friends List/Streetpass Hits: If you've got lots of friends that play Bravely Default then sweet! They'll all be auto-added to your list when you first synch up via the internet. Via The Demo: If you've downloaded the demo version then you can transfer some villagers you've already got from that into the full game.
Why its Worth Doing
There's quite a few unique special moves and items available once unlocked in your village and these are then available to buy from the adventurer with the red hat (who allows you to save).
Each shop has multiple 'levels' that unlock new items to buy and therefore - with some proper planning - you can unlock some really handy skills and items fairly early on (such as Ether for refilling your magic meter, or compounds for when you've unlocked the Salve-Maker job).
Not only that; but the red-hatted adventurer will also give you a fairly regular stream of free items ! They can be Potions , Phoneix Downs , Element-based attack items etc. So clearly, with exclusive unlocks, free items (and if you use our tip about sleep mode) then free SP too!
Best Way to Rebuild
We've found that putting your extra villagers to work - right after adding more friends via Streetpass or online synching - is the best way to unlock the extra shop levels/new areas (don't forget to trigger any upgrades as you're playing normally either - so you're not wasting any time).
Sleep mode uses very little of your 3DS battery and you can leave it to work overnight as you're sleeping (giving you the extra bonus of a free Bravely Second - aka: Sleep Point) turn by keeping your 3DS in Sleep Mode for 8 hours.
So for every 8 hours of Sleep Mode use you'll add +1 SP to your total (up to a maximum of three) and you'll have been building shops/opening new areas at the same time! Using 8 hours as a barometer for the lengthier builds is good as it means you'll roughly know when it'll be finished (and you'll know you've gained another SP).
Shop/Access Points Unlocks and Timescales
You'll notice (via our example below), that the time reduced by adding more villagers gets worse when you reach a certain point (meaning that chucking 20 people on one build isn't the most efficient way of doing things). Whilst we'll highlight what we think is the most efficient number of people to use; we'll leave it up to you to decide how to prioritize your villagers with the data offered on the next few pages.
The Laws of Diminishing Returns
One key thing to note about the timescales aspect is that it's not always best to use every person you have on a single building/access path. At some point; adding more people actually becomes a waste of time. Let's take a look at an example to show you what we mean...
Example: If you wanted to upgrade the Hill Parts Shop from Level 3 to Level 4 it takes one villager 9 hours to do it. If we increase the number of villagers assigned to that upgrade one at a time; you'll see that this time bonus starts to decrease...

What the table above shows is that once you hit five villagers helping at once; the value of the additional helpers drops dramatically. Sticking five villagers on it will save you 7 Hours and 12 Minutes (compared to just using one villager), compared to using 10 and only saving 8 Hours and 6 Minutes .
So those extra 5 villagers are only shaving off an additional 1 hour and 6 Minutes . Clearly that's not worth it, so it's important that you're not using more villagers than you need to on any given shop upgrade/access point.
Example 2: Now let's take a look at the longest event which is digging a tunnel through Rigid Crag . This takes a back-crippling 99 hours for a single villager to do on their lonesome. If we start adding more villagers, let's see where this law kicks in...

Spotting a pattern here? Once again we see that after putting five villagers on the job; the time an additional villager saves starts to become less and less.
So in general the best person to time-saved ratio is five villagers per job . Keeping this in mind will maximize their value and minimize the time you need to spend on getting these game-changing buildings up quickly.
Once you're nearing the end of rebuilding the village then it clearly makes sense to ignore this idea and just put as many people to work on a remaining area until it's all complete.
