Anders is a spirit healer. His real name is unknown, and his nickname refers to the fact that his family is from Anderfels. When he started to exhibit magical abilities and set a barn on fire, his father grew afraid of him. At the age of twelve he was handcuffed and taken by the templars to the Ferelden Circle Tower. The only personal possession he was allowed to keep was a pillow hand embroidered by his mother. Anders despised the Circle and compared it to a prison. He made at least seven and at most dozens of attempts to escape the tower, each time being returned and punished by the templars. Yet First Enchanter Irving believed that Anders, however reckless, posed no true threat.
Anders’ next-to-last escape earned him a year of solitary confinement, in which the only company he had most days was the tower’s mouser named Mr. Wiggums. The final time he managed to run away was prior to Uldred’s uprising.
Aveline is the daughter of a chevalier named Benoit Du Lac, who fled from Orlais to Fereldan after losing his patron to assassination. Raising her on stories of knights and adventures, he hoped Aveline would be a knight, even naming her after Ser Aveline, the Knight of Orlais. He eventually sold everything he had to sponsor her into King Cailan Theirin’s service.
Aveline met and married Ser Wesley Vallen while in the Fereldan army. However, Loghain’s betrayal at the Battle of Ostagar forced them to flee the darkspawn horde. They eventually made their way to Lothering, where they met Hawke.
Bethany Hawke is Hawke’s younger sister and Carver’s fraternal twin. Bethany is an apostate mage; she received her magical training from her father, who was also an apostate.
She will accompany Hawke if he/she chooses the Warrior or Rogue class role at the beginning of the game.
Carver Hawke is Hawke’s brash younger brother aged 18 years at the start of the game, and Bethany’s fraternal twin. Carver is a warrior who specializes in Two-Handed weaponry. After the death of Malcolm Hawke in 9:27, Carver signed up for military service, and fought in the Battle of Ostagar.
Once a slave of Danarius, a Tevinter Magister, Fenris bears markings of lyrium on his skin that have granted him the unnatural ability to phase through solid objects. Fenris uses this ability as a weapon, phasing through individuals and solidifying, killing them violently. However, the experiments performed on him also caused him to lose all of his memories. He has fled to Kirkwall as a fugitive, hunted by the soldiers of his former master. The lyrium burned into his body causes him pain, making him guarded against physical contact; however, it is more of an aversion to them being touched rather than physical pain.
Isabela is not her birth name. Her birth name is unknown. She is originally from Rivain, but has traveled far and visited many places during her life. She was once married to the original owner of The Siren’s Call, until he was killed by Zevran for unknown reasons, leading her to inherit the ship. She doesn’t seem too regretful over her husband’s death, calling him a "greasy bastard", explaining her rather cordial relationship with Zevran. She has picked up a special fighting technique during her travels, one that depends on speed instead of strength. Since she has learned this technique by dueling many different warriors, she calls herself a "duelist".

The Tethras family was once part of the noble caste in Orzammar, until Varric’s father was caught fixing Provings. Such was the disgrace and danger to the family that the household had no choice but to leave for the surface. Unlike his brother, Varric was born in Kirkwall and has no feeling of loyalty and love to Orzammar, his knowledge of which is largely second-hand. He is a merchant prince among the surface dwarves.
Sebastian Vael (DLC)
The Vaels believed that their youngest son, Sebastian, was a disgrace to the family name, and would be a weight around his brothers’ necks. They forced him into the Chantry, exiling him from their principality of Starkhaven. While he was not without faith, Sebastian did not wish to give up his life in service to Andraste so early in his existence, and with the aid of the compassionate Grand Cleric Elthina, escaped. Elthina helped him to regain his faith however, and after reflection, Sebastian returned to the Chantry, this time willingly, and through the front door.
Now, Sebastian is forced to re-enter the viper’s nest of princely politics when his family is brutally murdered, leaving him as the sole surviving heir.
