Guardian Forces

Tonberry

To acquire Tonberry you’ll need to visit the Centra Ruins and dispatch 18+ Tonberry enemies, after which the Tonberry King might show up. Tonberry King will appear immediately after you kill a lesser Tonberry, so you’ll need to be prepared to continue fighting after vanquishing each Tonberry. Once you’ve defeated the Tonberry King you’ll acquire the Tonberry GF, who attacks with its iconic Chef’s Knife, dealing non-elemental damage (base power 60) to a random enemy.

Tonberry Abilities

As another late game GF, it should be no surprise that Tonberry has an odd mix of abilities, including not a single stat junction. For what its worth, Tonberry does come with Eva+30% and Luck+50% already learned.

LV Down and LV Up are two of Tonberry’s more iconic abilities, as they allow you to manipulate the enemy’s level in combat. LV Down is useful for weakening foes so they’re easier to fight, or so they don’t give you much XP if you’re trying to keep your levels down. LV Up, on the other hand, can allow low-level parties to acquire gear from high-level enemies. It can be used repeatedly, and the more times you use it on a single enemy, the greater the effect.

Other, less novel (but still useful) abilities possessed by Tonberry include Auto-Potion (character uses restoratives when damaged), Initiative (character starts battle with their ATB bar filled) and Move-HP Up (character regenerates HP as they walk).

Tonberry’s most interesting abilities have to do with shopping, however. Haggle will reduce the cost of items at stores, while Sell-High will increase the value of items you sell. Familiar will cause some merchants to sell rare goods they’d otherwise not sell (especially the Esthar Pet Shop) and Call Shop allows you to summon a shop from the main menu at any time. Decreasing the cost of items and increasing the sale value of items you sell make the infinite Gil loop even more lucrative, while Familiar will allow you to purchase items you can later refine into stat boosting items via GFAbl Med-RF.
