In contrast to many past Fire Emblem installments, the archer returns in Fates with a major improvement. Quick Draw can stack very quickly with other skills such as Bowfaire leading to a huge amount of flat damage added to the unit’s damage output. Combine that with its star promotion, Sniper, having a high critical hit rate, plus the high Skill leading to lots of skill activations, and the archer becomes very powerful very fast.

The biggest drawback of the archer (pun unintended) is that they can only attack from afar unless equipping special bows or yumi that allow for point blank range. However, the archer’s skill at sniping down any and all flying classes will prove to be worthwhile for your army. Guard the archer properly so that they are not attacked from point blank range and they will work wonders for you.

As an interesting aside, Japanese archery and Western archery are actually miles apart and have drastically different bow designs, so the difference between Hoshido’s yumi and Nohr’s bows has solid historical justification. Neat right? …no? So it’s just me? Okay…
