Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak

New Great Sword Silkbind Attacks and Switch Skills

By
Matt Chard

The Great Sword is one of 14 weapon types in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. The play style of the Great Sword is by using slow, powerful attacks which can be charged up to inflict large amounts of damage in a single hit. Because of this, you’ll need good positioning, and understanding of the fight ahead if you want to maximize your output. With Sunbreak, the Great Sword will obtain new Silkbind Attacks as well as new Switch Skills which will add even more depth to its already powerful arsenal.

The Great Sword is a slow weapon that has powerful charged attacks.

New Silkbind Attack: Strongarm Stance

This new technique gives the Great Sword a much-needed counter. By using ironsilk to reinforce both your arms and weapon temporarily, you’ll be able to take reduced damage from the monster attack, which gives you a chance to counter. The timing can be tight, but if you’re used to performing counters from the other weapon types, you shouldn’t have any problem here. Hysteria will cost you two Wirebugs to use, but its gauge recovery speed is fast, so you won’t have to wait too long to use it again.

Another great thing about this new attack is if you use it while charging, you can parry the attack, and counter with a Charged Slash Combo afterwards. This is done by charging up the overhead slash button after parrying the attack. One thing to note is that not all attacks can be countered, so you will have to learn what attacks you can do this against.

How to unlock Strongarm Stance

Once you’ve completed the MR3★ Urgent Quest “Ice Wolf, Red Moon”, you will become Master Rank 4. This will allow you to unlock the second batch of Switch Skills including Strongarm Stance by talking to Master Utsushi in the Kamura Gathering Hub.

New Switch Skill: Surge Slash Combo

This is an interesting addition to the Great Swords move set. The Surge Slash Combo allows you to completely change from the sluggish, but powerful one hit attacks that the Great Sword is usually known for to a play style which utilizes faster multi-hit combos. This combo is a 3-hit attack that can be combined into a Level 2 Charge Slash.

How to unlock Surge Slash Combo

This technique can be learned early on in the expansion by defeating the Daimyo Hermitaur that Rondine gives you the quest for. This allows you to go to Elgado, where you’ll talk to Master Arlow, and eventually Master Utsushi. He’ll give you the first batch of new Switch Skills including Surge Slash Combo.

New Switch Skill: Backslide

Backslide is a new evasive technique that allows you to maintain your charge level during a charged attack or keep up your surge slash combos while evading. You can use the movement stick to fine-tune the direction you’re evading.

How to unlock Backslide

Once you’ve completed the MR3★ Urgent Quest “Ice Wolf, Red Moon”, you will become Master Rank 4. This will allow you to unlock the second batch of Switch Skills including Backslide by talking to Master Utsushi in the Kamura Gathering Hub.

Switch Skill Swap

This isn’t a new skill, but it is a new way to use them! The Switch Skill Swap will allow you to change your equipped skills whilst in battle. There will be two scrolls, one red, and one blue. By visiting an Item box either at the hub or in the tent during a quest, you can customize your favorite skills to each scroll.

The Switch Skill Swap system looks to reinvent the way Monster Hunter Rise is played.

When you’re in battle, you can swap between each set to give you access to your other skills. Another great addition to this system was the Swap Evade. This allows you to evade in any direction by pressing the roll button after you have swapped sets.
