Diablos General Information

Diablos is a surprisingly common monster you’ll encounter during various quests, although you only have to fight it once for story purposes. Still, if you disliked it during your first encounter… well, bad news, because you’ll be seeing it many more times in various forms if you want to complete all the quests.

The first time you encounter it is during the First Wyvernian’s quests, in the assignment Horned Hostility Below the Sands. After that, the quests Twin Spires Upon the Sands and Special Arena: Diablos should unlock.

In High Rank play, you’ll unlock the quest Well, That Diablos! after completing the mandatory Elder’s Recess expedition, while the optional quest RRRRRumble in the Waste! will unlock after you’ve advanced the beverage-related questline along far enough. To do this, you’ll first have to do quests for various characters in the Research Base after defeating Nergigante. These quests are, in order: Stuck in Their Ways and A Sore Site. After completing A Sore Site and returning to the Research Base, talk to the Third Fleet Master to start RRRRRumble in the Waste!.

There’s also a Special Arena: HR Diablos quest that should unlock after hunting High Rank Diablos, should you care to fight the beast in a more intimate setting.

Diablos Strengths and Weaknesses

Diablos is replete with weak spots, but they’re not all equal for all weapons. The head takes the most damage from Blunt and Ammo damage, with somewhat less Cut damage. The wings take little Blunt damage, moderate Cut damage, and high Ammo damage. Finally, the body takes great Cut and Blunt damage, and moderate Ammo damage. The horn anad body are both breakable, with the tail being severable.

Given its dry domain, it should be no surprise that Diablos is resistant to Fire and weak to Ice. Water and Dragon are both good back-up elements, however.

Diablos is weak to Paralysis, and somewhat receptive to Poison, Sleep and Blast.

There’s not much you can do to prepare for Diablos, as its a physical mauler. Boosting your HP as high as possible and using Demondrugs and Ironskins will help a bit, especially against the High Rank and Tempered versions. There are no elements it uses, no ailments it inflicts, and trying to resist its roars is probably more gear-intensive than it’s really worth. Bring plenty of healing and don’t get greedy your attacks.

Diablos Attacks

The good news is that Diablos has relatively few attacks, but the bad news is, it’s a relentless attacker and when it hits, it hurts. Despite being classified as a Flying Wyvern (and in fact, it does have wings) it’ll never take to the sky, instead being an adept burrower. That’s not to say it doesn’t take after other monsters in its classification however, as it’s quite fond of charging. This time, however, the “pace-back-and-forth” attacks typical of this class of monster actually look imposing on a beast this massive, with impressive horns to further justify the attack. Its charges are of various distances and severities, but be especially concerned when it roars, after which it’ll put its head down and charge, dealing massive damage.

Fortunately, most of its charges are easy to block, if you have a shield, and staying near and circling around the monster is usually a good tactic, for those whose weapons allow them the mobility to do so. Against closer foes it’ll employ a two-strike tail slam using its massive, club-like tail, a sideways hip-check, or it’ll just use its horns to slash at you, depending on where you’re located.

As mentioned earlier, Diablos, far from taking to the skies, prefers to burrow underground, instead. At this it excels, and in the sandy areas it occupies, this allows it to move rapidly from exterior areas to the caves below. More than that, however, Diablos uses its burrowing as a form of attack, too, as it can violently surface under would-be hunters, dealing great damage. This, too, can be blocked handily enough with a shield, and the burrowing and surfacing both provide brief windows to score a few quick attacks, if you’re careful. For those not blessed with a shield, the only option is to look out for the upheaval on the ground, which marks the Diablos’s passage, and run like hell.

The rarest drops for both Low Rank and High Rank Diablos - the ones you’ll likely care to farm, anyways - are its horns. Low Rank Diablos has a very low chance of dropping its Twisted Horn, while High Rank Diablos has a similar chance to drop its Majestic Horn. Both can only be obtained by breaking the horn during combat. Otherwise, High Rank Diablos can drop a Wyvern Gem, but it’s much easier to farm Barroth and Jyuratodus for these, instead.

This guide features a full, beginning-to-end walkthrough written in an “ideal chronological order of events” format. Main quests are interspersed with side quests in the order in which they unlock, although some side quests and arena challenges may only be referenced instead of fully explained. These are typically quests that have you facing a monster you’ve already fought under similar circumstances that offer no unique reward for completion. For example, after completing most main quests you won’t be able to attempt that quest again, but you’ll usually unlock an identical side quest allowing you to hunt the same monster in the same area with the same success/failure conditions.

Monster strategies will be discussed in detail as you encounter them throughout the walkthrough, featuring elemental and status information and drop lists. The guide also features a fully detailed bestiary for those who just want information about specific monsters unaccompanied by a walkthrough. Trophy/achievement information can also be found in a separate trophy/achievement guide, although be warned: many trophies/achievements in Monster Hunter World are easier said than done.

Other features of this guide include:

  • Information on crafting/harvesting.
  • Side quests that unlock mantles, ingredients and other useful features.
  • Field Researcher quests including where to catch rare fish, how to capture small monsters, and where to locate Grimalkynes/Gajalaka.
  • Grimalkyne/Gajalaka quests.
  • How to upgrade the Ancient Tree/Harvest Box and how to unlock various fertilizers.
  • How the Elder Melder works, melding different items and decorations.
  • Where to find the Powertalon and Armortalon, and how to upgrade them into the Powercharm and Armorcharm.
  • Detailed information on how to unlock Tempered Monsters, the difference between Threat Level 1, 2 and 3 Tempered Monsters.
  • Information on Feystones, including drop rates, the differences between the types (Mysterious, Gleaming, Worn and Warped).
  • How to get Warrior’s Streamstones and Hero’s Streamstones.
