Inside, you’ll be greeted by the spinning arrow tiles from the Team Rocket Hideout. First, step on the right-facing arrow tile to the north-west of the yellow floor tile near the entrance. You’ll be sent spinning to the north-east of an Ace Trainer. Go over and battle him.
Know Your Match-Ups: Ground
Ground-types are weak to Grass, Water and Ice. They beat Fire, Electric, Rock and Steel-types, and they can resist Poison and Rock. On top of that, they’re immune to Electric. But Flying-types are immune to them. As long as you’re not facing a Rock/Ground-type, Articuno is a great choice.
Ace Trainer Samuel
Samuel has a fully evolved male Nidoran. Because it’s gained the Ground-type, it’s weak to Water, Ice, Ground and Psychic. For attacks, it can use STAB Earthquake, and Megahorn to nail Psychics.
Afterwards, go past Samuel and step on the left-facing arrow tile. If you can’t walk past him, you can use the down-facing arrow tile in the top-left corner. You’ll be sent towards the far left and a Tamer will spot you straight away.
Well, you just defeated a Nidoking, so a Nidorino should be pretty easy. In case you’re wondering, it’s a Poison-type, so your Ground-type counters aren’t too useful here. If possible, use Ground or Psychic-types. Also, beware of its Horn Drill that can one-hit KO.
Next is Rhyhorn, which is actually a Ground-type. It’s Rock too, so it’s weak to Ground, Fighting, Ice and Steel, and massively weak to Grass and Water. For attacks, it has STAB Drill Run and Rock Slide. Plus Megahorn to hurt Grass-types that aren’t also Poison.
From here, step on the arrow tile directly above you to get sent to the north-west corner of the room. Like before, you’ll have to battle a trainer straight away.
Ace Trainer Kelly
Kelly has a fully evolved female Nidoran. Like its male counterpart, it’s weak to Water, Ground, Ice and Psychic. It too can use STAB Earthquake, but for its secondary attack, it can use the Fighting-type Superpower. Therefore, Ice-types that don’t resist Fighting are in slight danger.
Moving on, step on the arrow tile above Kelly. You’ll end up in the south-east corner of the room. Once again, before you can move, you’ll have to fight a trainer.
Ace Trainer Yuji
Dugtrio is a fully evolved Diglett, and a pretty speedy bugger. It can use STAB Earthquake, Sucker Punch to try and go first, and Fissure for a potential one-hit KO. Flying-types are highly recommended.
Next is Rhyhorn, which is a lot easier. This one has same moveset of Drill Run, Rock Slide and Megahorn. As with all Rock/Ground-types, it’s weak to Ice, Fighting, Ground and Steel, and takes huge damage from Water and Grass.
Next, grab the Revive that’s right near Yuji. Then step on the left-facing arrow tile to go flying again. You’ll be back at the entrance. But you haven’t wasted your time. Go left from the yellow floor tile and step on the left-facing arrow tile. You’ll reach the south-west corner.
Now go up towards the back of the Tamer from earlier. Then step on the right-facing arrow tile to the right. You may notice it’s blue instead of green, like the other arrow tiles. You’ll be taken to the centre of this room. In the middle is a Tamer and Black Belt. You’ll have to battle at least one of them to proceed.
Jason has brought along an evolved Sandshrew. This one can use Dig to hide for a turn and do damage on the next, and Slash since it is a Sandslash after all. It can also use Protect to stall, and Swords Dance to boost its Attack.
Black Belt Takashi
Graveler is the middle evolution of Geodude. Like the rest of its family, it’s weak to Ground, Ice, Fighting and Steel, and takes heavy damage from Water and Grass. This one can use STAB Rock Slide and Earthquake.
Once you’re past, step on the up-facing arrow tile to reach the yellow floor tile one space away. From there, head north into the dark corridor. The lights will dramatically come on, revealing the identity of the final Gym Leader. Well, shall we get started?
Gym Leader Giovanni
The Team Rocket boss leads with Dugtrio, an evolved Diglett. It’s rather speedy, so be cautious. For attacks, it has Earthquake for STAB, Sucker Punch to sneak in an early attack, and Slash. You can go for the standard Water, Grass or Ice, or try and wall it with a Flying-type.
Next up can be Rhydon, which is an evolved Rhyhorn. It’s weak to Ground, Ice, Fighting and Steel, and doubly weak to Grass and Water. It can use STAB Earthquake and Rock Slide, plus Megahorn. Water and Grass are the way to go, but non-Poison Grass-types should be wary.
Nidoqueen is a fully evolved female Nidoran. It’s weak to Water, Ice, Ground and Psychic. This one can use Earthquake for STAB, Crunch to hurt Psychics, and Super Fang to halve your current HP. That leaves Water, Ice and Ground as the safest choices.
Finally, Nidoking is a fully evolved male Nidoran. It has the same weaknesses as Nidoqueen. This monarch has two STAB moves: Poison Jab and Earthquake. It also knows Megahorn, and carries Horn Drill to gamble for a one-hit KO. Likewise, try to stick to Water, Ice or Ground.
Topple Giovanni and he’ll be forced to give you his Earth Badge, as well as TM41 Earthquake. This is the strongest Ground-type move, and it can also hit all targets during Double Battles–that includes your ally, mind you. Afterwards, exit the Gym by using the right-facing arrow tile. Outside, you’ll run into Blue, who tells you where to go next.
