Pokémon can be afflicted by a variety of status conditions during battle. Most of the time, status conditions are caused by a Pokémon’s moves, whether as a primary or secondary effect; for example, the move Thunder Wave causes paralysis.

As you might expect, status conditions negatively affect the Pokémon and can potentially even cripple their performance. However, just like they can be caused, status conditions can be cured, by using certain items, by playing in Pokémon Refresh or by paying a visit to a friendly Pokémon Centre.

Common Status Conditions

Name Symptom(s) Cure(s)
Burn The Pokémon takes a tiny amount of damage at the end of every turn. In addition, their Attack stat falls drastically. Burn Heal, Rawst Berry
Freeze The Pokémon cannot perform any action. Cures naturally after a number of turns in battle. Upon thawing, the Pokémon immediately performs its selected move. Ice Heal, Aspear Berry
Paralysis The Pokémon sometimes cannot move, therefore losing their turn. In addition, their Speed stat is reduced. Parylz Heal, Cheri Berry
Poison The Pokémon takes some damage at the end of every turn. Damage increases exponentially if the Pokemon is poisoned by Toxic. Antidote, Pecha Berry
Sleep The Pokémon cannot perform any action. Cures naturally after a number of turns in battle. Upon waking, the Pokémon immediately performs its selected move. Awakening, Chesto Berry
Confusion The Pokémon may hurt itself instead of performing an action. Cures naturally after a number of turns in battle or if the affected Pokémon is switched out. Can overlap with the above status conditions. Persim Berry

Except for confusion, status conditions persist after battle, so it’s worth your time to cure them when a safe opportunity arises. On the other hand, your opponents during the story rarely have the means to cure their Pokémon, so don’t hesitate to “gift” them with a status condition to gain the upper hand.
