Upon your arrival in Iki Town, Kukui and the others will be waiting there for you. Up ahead, by the stairs to the upper half of town is the island kahuna himself, Hala. As Kukui kindly pointed out, Hala specializes in the Fighting-type, so your best friends here will be Flying, Psychic or Fairy-types.
Before jumping into battle, if you visited Kala’e Bay earlier and saw the contents of the letter in the bottle, you have a duty to inform the recipient found somewhere in this town. To save you the effort of looking, head for the south-west house and look for the woman by the sink. You’ll receive a Stardust as thanks.
Once you’re ready to begin the greatest battle Melemele Island has seen, talk to Hala and he’ll get everything set up for you. If any of your Pokémon were hurt along the way, they will be magically healed before the battle begins. That said, if you need to make any last minute changes, now’s your chance.
Island Kahuna Hala
Note : Hala can use a Super Potion to heal his Pokémon.
Hala’s Pokémon are all rugged Fighting-types, so hopefully you took our advice and brought along some Flying, Psychic and/or Fairy-types. Conveniently enough, the Hawlucha we recommended for the Verdant Cavern trial will also excel here, since it’s part Flying. Ghosts are excellent too, since they are immune to two of Hala’s Pokémon.
The battle begins with Hala sending out his Machop. Don’t be fooled by its small size, if allowed to set up with Focus Energy, Machop can cause some serious damage with its Karate Chop. Slam it hard and fast, ideally with super-effective Pokémon, before it has a chance to wreak havoc.
Next, Hala may send out Makuhita. This tiny sumo wrestler loves to use Fake Out to score a free hit and break your concentration. If possible, use a battle item like an X Attack, X Defense or a Roto Boost so you don’t end up wasting a turn. For annoyance, it can use Sand Attack to lower your Accuracy.
Finally, Hala’s last line of defense is Crabrawler. This battle-hardened crab can use Power-Up Punch to simultaneously deal damage and raise its Attack, and can use the Fighting Z-Move too. More than ever, Pokémon that can resist Fighting are strongly recommended. Ghost Pokémon should be benched since it knows Pursuit.
Topple Hala and his Fightium Z is all yours! With this Fighting-type Z-Crystal in hand, you’ll have officially cleared all of the trials Melemele Island has to offer. Awesome! The good news doesn’t end there though. Clearing this first Grand Trial will make it so that all Pokémon up to Level 35 will obey you, even if traded.
Furthermore, to aid you in your adventure, Hala will hand you a precious Ride Pager , as well as Tauros Charge as a Ride Pokémon option.
The Ride Pager
This high-tech tool allows you to instantly summon Ride Pokémon at any time outside of battle. Ride Pokémon are Pokémon you can borrow, with a variety of abilities. In Tauros’s case, it can traverse areas at great speed, while also breaking any cracked boulders blocking your path.
Essentially, Ride Pokémon replace HMs from previous Pokémon games. Anyway, to use the Ride Pager, all you have to do is press the Y button to activate it, then select a Ride Pokémon to use. You can also set a D-Pad shortcut for up to 4 Ride Pokémon. How convenient!
During the excitement, Ilima pops in to make a recommendation to visit the newly-opened Alola Photo Club in Hau’oli City. Kukui isn’t a cheapskate either and rewards you with TM54 False Swipe . This handy move always leaves an opponent with at least 1 HP, making it fantastic for weakening and capturing Pokémon.
It won’t work on Ghost-types though, unless you use Foresight or Odour Sleuth, or a move that changes the opponent’s type. Finally, Hau’s "gift" to you is an announcement that the Hau’oli City Shopping Mall is now open. After the commotion is finally over, you’re free to leave this island for the next.
Before that though, head for the lower half of town and make your way (back) to the south-west house. Open your Ride Pager and choose to ride Tauros. Near the bottom-right corner of the house is a small pile of boulders. Hold the B button and dash straight into the boulders to break them. Afterwards grab Totem Sticker #001 on the wall.
