Ratchet & Clank

Planet Kerwan

By
Jarrod Garripoli

The situation is dire on Kerwan, as it seems the invasion of the city has already started. Your first objective is to fly around and destroy the Armored Transports with your own ship. Although there isn’t any huge danger, you have buttons assigned to perform a barrel roll if necessary, as well as ones to use your blaster. It may be a little challenging to find the transports on your own, as the ships aren’t necessarily huge. There is a marker on your screen that indicates where the transports are located, with you having to destroy one at first, then a few more after that.

Should you need any health back, you can always shoot the random ships flying around for a chance. After destroying the transports, it’s time to bring down the big warship, but your pitiful lasers won’t do the trick. Thankfully, Clank has a plan to use the warbots as “live” ammunition, with you using a sort of tractor beam to pick them up and then launch them at the big ship. You’ll need to fly in close enough and hold down Triangle, then once you have enough of the warbots, get in close to the ship and launch them via the button shown on your screen on the left side. It should take 2 1/2 loads of warbots to bring down the ship.

Pick up the Warbots with the Triangle button (left) and launch them at the big ship when close enough (right).

Find Hall of Heroes

Well, that was something unfortunate now, wasn’t it? You’re told to find someone named Al, who will help by upgrading Clank, but you can’t just waltz up to him, as there are a bunch of enemies in the way. In addition to the Blargs with basic blasters, you have some bigger ones with faster-shooting ones, as well as mechanical bulldogs and even some helicopters that have a similar rate of fire to the dropships you’ve encountered on other planets. The good thing is that the path is relatively short and should you find yourself needing ammo or health, then the vendor is not that far away. Once you get to the end, press the button to the left of the door to open it and meet up with Big Al.

Clank has finally got the much-needed upgrade, the Helipack . Standing still and pressing R1 will launch Ratchet straight into the air, while moving and pressing R1 will do a long jump. You can also perform a glide maneuver by jumping and then holding X while in the air. When you’re finishing toying around with your new gadget, navigate the boxes beyond Big Al and jump to the ledge with the elevator. You should see an area you can glide down to with a lot of enemies, so either start picking them off before going down or get ready for intense action once you do. A few more enemies will join in via an elevator, which you will take once the coast is clear. Continue your fight until you eventually reach the train station, where you can find a few goodies.

Right next to where you entered the train station is a big box with arrows on it, so use the Helipack to jump on top of it, then get on top of the other boxes. Now, you can perform a long jump to reach the stack of crates, where you should see a shiny Gold Bolt sitting on the floor. Across from where you can use the Swingshot targets to get onto the train is another stack of crates, which are hiding a Holocard deck behind it. Once you’ve gotten the goodies, get onto the train and get ready for some action. Your goal is to get to the front of the train, where there will be a bomb. Despite the urgency of the situation, there is no timer, so you can take all the time in the world.

You’ll find goodies behind the two large stacks of crates at the train station.

There will be a few enemies and obstacles along the way, some of which will require you to hit buttons to clear. The enemies you will encounter are the big brutes, along with a few robodogs hiding in crates, and even a few helicopters (two waiting at the end). At two points, you will need to grab onto some pipes and shimmy along it to get onto the side of the train, where you can get to the top section. After the first pipe section, you will encounter a train car with tentacles that will try to hit you as you get close; shooting or hitting them with your wrench will cause them to recede into the train car. At the end of the train segment, turn the bolt crank to dispose of the bomb, then wait until you get to the Hall of Heroes.

Finish the Training Course

You are now officially a Ranger and before you get to go out and do actual stuff, you’ll have to go through the basic training course that was designed by Qwark. This will be pretty standard platforming, where you will be jumping on platforms that move in and out of the wall, so you’ll sometimes have to wait; the same will be true with a few of the wall jump segments. At the top of the first tower, there will be a few Swingshot targets as you descend to the next area. Once you manage to get to the end, you can grab a very easy Gold Bolt , then take the taxi back to the Ranger HQ, where you will meet up with Qwark. He’ll give you a new ship, as well as a secret mission, opening up another new planet. Before you head there, though, you’ll need something from Rilgar.
