Containment

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

A guide on how to complete the Containment quest in the College of Winterhold storyline, including how to defeat the Magic Anomalies. This quest will be automatically accepted after completing Revealing the Unseen.

Mirabelle will awaken you and ask that you find the Arch-Mage.

After you wake up following the explosion in the Hall of Elements, you’re told by Mirabelle that you need to find Savos Aren, the Arch-Mage. Leave the area and speak to Tolfdir, who’s just outside.

After you discover that the Arch-Mage has been killed, Tolfdir will ask that you immediately head to Winterhold and help them! On the way across the bridge, speak to Faralda and she’ll come down and help out with the Magic Anomalies infesting the city.

There are 10 Magic Anomalies to defeat. They look a bit like Ice Wraiths but more magical and they are quite tanky. They don’t do a lot of damage on their own, but if you’re being swarmed by them, you may be overwhelmed quite quickly if you haven’t got any restoration spells or healing potions. They take a lot of damage to kill each one, but with Faralda and Arniel Gane on your side you’ll take them out reasonably quickly. You should also make sure to loot them as they hold filled soul gems that can be used for enchanting.

Take out all 10 of the Magic Anomalies.

After you kill them, return to the College and head to the Hall of Elements to speak with Mirabelle. Tell her about the Staff of Magnus and the Labyrinthian and she’ll give you the Torc of Labyrinthian and Savos Aren’s Amulet which offers increased magicka when worn.
