Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness was first announced as being in development in Famitsu (a Japanese magazine) in April 2015, and subsequently released in Japan for both the Playstation 4 and Playstation 3, on March 31 2016 and April 28 2016, respectively. The game was released in North America on June 28, 2016, and in Europe on July 1, 2016. It was developed by tri-Ace, the same company that did all other entries in the series, with the musical score being done by Motoi Sakuraba, the same composer who did the music for all of the games.

The game is said to take place between Star Ocean: The Second Story (Spacedate 366) and Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (Spacedate 772). It takes place on Faykreed, a planet that is six thousand light years away from Earth. It has many features from previous games incorporated in it, such as item creation, the Private Action system, as well as the same real-time battle system from previous titles.
