Description

The might Malboro, most iconic of plant monsters in Final Fantasy, if not all of gaming! Well, the Cactuar might have something to say about that, but it appears to have fled… anywho, this bowling-ball shaped Venus fly trap is basically just an orb with a mouth surrounded by tentacles, and that mouth is good for three things - biting for low damage, spewing Gastric Juice (hits multiple times for low damage - this is a very dangerous attack for later variants) and emitting its signature Bad Breath attack. Bad Breath doesn’t just deal damage around the Malboro and hit multiple times, it also inflicts a slew of status effects, including Poison, Silence, Confusion and Curse. As bad as this sounds, it’s actually one of the weaker iterations of the Malboro in Final Fantasy, and it’s certainly the weakest member of the Malboro family in Crisis Core.

Being large plants, Malboros are fairly ponderous, and while their attacks can be painful (at least, with later variants of this monster), they’re all relatively short-range affairs. As long as you keep moving and time your attacks adeptly, you can run in, sneak in a hit or two, then retreat before the Malboro can counterattack. Using hit and run tactics or ranged attacks (especially fire damage, which it’s weak to) and you shouldn’t have too much trouble whittling down its 50,000~ HP.

You’ll encounter Malboros in the final dungeon in Chapter 10, but you can also find them on Mission 9-1-1, which you can attempt as early as Chapter 4.
