This page explains how to encounter and catch Ting-Lu, one of the Legendary Pokémon in Scarlet & Violet.
Ting-Lu is a Ruinous Pokémon and a member of the Legendary quartet known as the “Treasures of Ruin”.
Where to Find Ting-Lu¶
Ting-Lu is sealed behind the green shrine at Socarrat Trail, north of Casseroya Lake.
To release the seal, you must remove 8 green stakes dotted around north-west Paldea. For their precise locations, please refer to our Green Stakes page.
After doing so, there will be a message saying that a sound is coming from the shrine. Inspect the seal on the shrine (after saving your game first!) to encounter Ting-Lu.

How to Catch Ting-Lu¶
Pokémon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Ting-Lu | 60 | Dark Ground |
At the start of the fight, Ting-Lu’s Vessel of Ruin ability will trigger, lowering the Special Attack of all Pokémon except itself.
In terms of stats, Ting-Lu has incredible HP and Defense, great Attack and good Special Defense, but poor Speed and Special Attack.
For attacks, it can use Stomping Tantrum for Ground STAB, Throat Chop for Dark STAB and to disable sound-based attacks, Ruination to halve your HP and Rock Slide to scare Flying types. Beware that Stomping Tantrum becomes stronger if one of its previous attacks failed. This can be from Rock Slide/Ruination missing or being paralyzed.
Ting-Lu has a very low catch rate, so you should inflict a status ailment to improve your chances. This should be Paralyze or Sleep, unless you like gambling with Burn and Poison. Sleep has better odds, but lasts a few turns; you can apply it with Hypnosis, Yawn etc. Paralyze is less effective, but lasts forever; you can apply it using Glare, etc.
When damaging Ting-Lu, super-effective attacks are fine, as long as they’re not super strong (100+ base power), since Ting-Lu is incredibly bulk. As Ting-Lu’s HP begins to fall, you may wish to swap to False Swipe (obtained from Jacq, your homeroom teacher) so you don’t accidentally KO it.
Luckily, Ting-Lu cannot heal itself, so once you’ve got it down to low or 1 HP, you can relax a bit. However, Ting-Lu can still deal hefty damage, so don’t hesitate to use healing items yourself. If you’re taking heavy damage, X Defense can help reduce the impact. But keep in mind Ruination deals fixed damage.
When Ting-Lu has low HP (and afflicted with Paralyze or Sleep), it’s time to start chucking Poké Balls! Ultra Balls are always great. When it’s night time, Dusk Balls are better. If more than 10 turns have passed, Timer Balls are the best. If Ting-Lu is asleep, Dream Balls are also great, but those are very rare.
Recommended Pokémon for Catching Ting-Lu¶
A Pokémon that resists Stomping Tantrum would go a long way. This is Ting-Lu’s strongest move and it can hurt a lot if powered up by a previous move failing. Flying types are immune, but be careful as most are weak to Rock Slide. Corviknight, Hawlucha and Flamigo are a few Flying types that take neutral damage from Rock Slide.
Actually, Hawlucha is a really good pick, because it can learn False Swipe. In addition, it can use super-effective Fighting attacks to deal heavy damage to Ting-Lu, before swapping to False Swipe. The only thing it lacks is a way to Paralyze Ting-Lu, but you can let a different Pokémon (eg. Dudunsparce or Sandaconda) handle that.
