There are a number of side activities in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows that can be done to earn Knowledge Points, which unlock the higher tiers of the various skill trees. Kofuns are one of these activities, where you must traverse through a tomb to reach the legendary chest at the end of it. The Shimosato Kofun is one located in the Kii region of the map, in the Kumano Sanzan sub-region. This page will detail where to find the Shimosato Kofun, as well as guide you through the tomb.
The Shimosato Kofun will require Yasuke in order to get through it.
Finding the Shimosato Kofun¶
As mentioned above, the Shimosato Kofun is located in Kii, the region found at the southern end of the map. While looking at said map, look for the Kumano Sanzan sub-region, found on the eastern side of the Kii region. Check out the southern coastline of the Kii region and look toward the southeastern corner, where there are two small islands off the coast. These are the only islands in that area, so it’s not confusing with the other spots.
With these islands in view, the coastline just north of it will be going north for a little bit, then curving east again. Where it curves is where you want to go, as the Shimosato Kofun will northwest of that bend. The area with the kofun is a fairly open area, compared to some of the more wooden area surrounding it, so it’s not too hard to pinpoint. Note that this kofun requires you to use Yasuke, since you have to move some large shelves throughout the place to get through it.
You will find this kofun in the Kii region of the map.
Exploring the Shimosato Kofun¶
Upon finding the kofun, head down the stairs at the entrance and in the first room, you’ll see a chest you can loot, as well as a large container blocking proper entry into the tomb. Grab it with Yasuke and pull it away from the wall, then off to the side to get to the passage behind it. The next room will have some water in the middle and another path on the far side, but this is a dead end. You can see the legendary chest through a small hole, but that’s about it. Return to the previous room and look on the side to see some loose rocks and boards. While you can’t do anything from this side, this is a breakable wall that requires an explosion of some kind, so keep it in mind as you explore this kofun.
The only thing you can do is jump into the water and dive to find the underwater passage that leads into the next room. There is another breakable wall here, but nothing you can do about it right now, so explore the side path. The end has another container you can move, although there doesn’t see to be any give on it. Instead, the side room right next to it has an explosive pot on the ground and thankfully, Yasuke is strong enough to pick it up. So, do just that and carry it back to the room with the breakable wall, where you place it down next to it and shoot the pot from afar with one of your ranged weapons.
(1 of 3) Yasuke’s strength is needed to even get into the kofun.
This will reveal another swimming section, so quickly move through it before you run out of air/health. Surface and climb up to the top, where another breakable wall stops your progress. However, follow the other path to find a hole in a wall, where you can see an explosive pot on the other side. Shoot your bow/teppo to destroy the wall, then go down that passage, crawling underneath the spot when you have to do so. You will encounter another destructible wall at the end, as well as a side room to refill arrows/bullets, if needed.
Directly across from the ammo refills is a small room with boxes to move. Right past where they were positioned is another explosive pot in a small alcove. Bring it back to the breakable wall by the ammo refills and blow it open, allowing you to eventually reach a room with another container blocking your way, which has a pillar in the middle of it. Yasuke’s lack of height when jumping proves problematic here, but you can remedy that a little bit. To reach the ledge above, position the block you moved to get into the room near the wall and use that to get above to it.
From there, you can move the next block over a little bit to allow Yasuke to jump onto the central pillar. There is a chest with some loot in the one alcove that can be reached from here, but after doing that, continue to the other side and follow the long passage across a bridge and into another room with water below you. Dive down and look for the hallway to the side (not the one with stairs), leading you to a side room with another loot chest. Off of that room is one with a track in the middle, and an explosive pot on the one end.
(1 of 4) Use the block you moved and push it against the wall to get some extra height.
Pick up the pot and place it next to the breakable wall at the opposite end, then blow it up to reveal a block you can move. Pull/push this block to the end by where the pot spawned, allowing you to get to the ledge above it and slide down into the final room with the legendary chest!
Your reward is the Riddle of Steel legendary naginata, as well as Impactful Sprint Attack engraving. You’ll also receive a Knowledge Point for completing the kofun. To leave the tomb, go into the other passage in this room and you’ll come to an explosive pot by a breakable wall. Destroy it and you will be put in the room with the first pool of water, so find the spot with stairs going up to leave the kofun.
