When you play Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Stole Time, you will have to be able to choose a job class, called Lives. There are a total of 14 Lives in the game and you can actually do all of them, if you wanted. One of the Lives in the game is the Angler, which centers around fishing, as you could guess from the name. This page will go over the basics of the Angler class, like how to fish and the starting quest for it.
The Angler is one of the starting Lives you can pick in the game.
How to Unlock Angler¶
Since it is one of the starting Lives in the game, you don’t actually have to do anything to unlock the Angler. Once you have gotten to the point where you choose a Life, go to Auntie Anne at the main Guild Hall, then pick the Angler Life. If this is your second, or later, Life, then you will have the option to skip the Novice Quest and go straight back to the main game.
How to Fish¶
The Novice Quest for the Angler is titled The Fish, Cat and Angler, so after getting the job from Auntie Anne, you will have to find the Life Master, Gramps. Exit the Guild Hall and head to the docks to the southeast of it, where there will be a small shack. Head inside to find Gramps, who will welcome you and send you to Sardino, just outside of the shack, on the docks. Your first task will be to catch three Sardines, so you’re going to learn how to fish now!
When you see a shadow of a fish in the water, approach it and you will notice a button prompt. Press this button to cast your line and after a second or two, the fish will approach your lure. When you see this lure go under the surface of the water, that’s your cue to press the designated button to start reeling in the fish. This will spawn a circle on your screen, with a gauge to the left of it, which is the strength of your line. Should this empty before you deplete the fish’s health, you will lose the chance to catch that specific fish.

Note that fishing also depletes your SP as you use the reeling options, so if you run out of that, you’ll have to replenish it. So, the goal is to just bring the fish’s health down to zero to catch it, before the line gauge or your SP is depleted. This may seem difficult, but there is something you can do to basically ignore the line gauge altogether, which is by hitting the Sweet Spot.
Sweet Spot¶
This goes for the majority of the Gathering Lives, but for now, let’s concentrate on fishing. As you move the left analog around and reel in the fish, you might see the damage numbers be a different color, as well as have “Sweet” underneath them. This is a Sweet Spot and this does more damage to the fish’s health bar, as well as the added benefit of not depleting the fishing line’s gauge. However, SP will still be used while hitting Sweet Spots, so you still have to manage it. One of the first skills you can purchase in the Angler Tree allows you to search for the Sweet Spot, so you can always have access to it without searching blindly for it.
Another thing you want to be wary of is getting an Excellent when fishing. This goes across all of the Gathering jobs, as you simply need to do enough damage at the end when you finish off the fish and will usually come in the form of using one of the appropriate skills. For example, a strong reel might do like 200 damage, but a fully charged normal reel might do like 700 damage. Getting an Excellent will give you more rewards, like an extra fish and maybe even other things.

Best Skills for the Angler¶
When you first start out as an Angler, you will want to make sure you do the initial quest, unless you skip it. This will put you at the Fledging rank and open up one very important skill, called Sweet Spot Search. By pressing Square/X/Y when you are fishing, you can search for the Sweet Spot. If you see a speech bubble with three dots, you can pretty much just go to the opposite side. If you get the bubble with a question mark, then you’ll need to do a little more searching around until you find it. Remember that if you do the search and get the “!!,” then that is the Sweet Spot. Also, you can let go of the analog stick in that spot to keep it there.
To the left of the initial starting point on the Skill Board, you should see one called Rod Pull I. This will allow you hold down the reel button to initiate a charge attack, for a decent amount of SP. This charge attack does a lot of damage and is great for getting Excellents when fishing, since it’s always nice to receive extra rewards for free. Once you get to Apprentice, you can also unlock a special skill, called High and Dry (located just above the Sweet Spot Search). This will unlock a special gauge that fills up while fishing and when full, you can unleash a powerful skill.
