Xuanyangzi is the first NPC you’re introduced to while playing Wuchang Fallen Feathers. The NPC is a very important NPC for getting clues towards the storyline, and plays a major role in some of the endings, based on choices you can make through the story. Here’s a closer look at Xuanyagzi in Wuchang Fallen Feathers to get an idea of what to expect.

Xuanyangzi’s Chapter 1 meetings¶

For the most part, you will find Xuanyangzi around the Reverent Temple, pretty much throughout the game. He typically has something to say after defeating certain bosses. But, he can be on the road sometimes and is easy to miss. In addition, he typically only gives you some rewards or lore dumps for hand in. But, on occasion, you do get a choice.

In Chapter 1, it’s largely - return to him and give him the hand-ins before the next event triggers. This is other than the 3rd and 5th meetings.

1. After speaking to him at the start of the game, his quest updates after defeating Dhutanga at Lightzen Temple. He can be found outside near the sick tents
2. Speak to him after defeating Lu Bingzhang and you’ll receive a Red Mercury Shoot
3. From the tree shortcut, follow the path around the corner to find a large enemy with a boulder. Defeat the enemy and continue down the stairs. At the bottom, you’ll find him to your right.
4. Head upstairs in Reverant Temple after reaching Doomwillow Beach and talk to him. He’ll give you 4 Bunny Buns! And tell you he’ll go there himself.
5. After defeating the treant boss, go up the pathway towards Palace Pass. Follow the road to the cliff and enter the grove area. He is by a wooden bridge opposite the turtle statue. He gives you 3x Fixed Origin Pills.
6. He is in the temple after defeating the Lotus Pond boss. Mentions Snowfall Palace being Rich with Red Mercury Ore, which may help treat feathering.

Xuanyangzi’s Chapter 2 meetings¶

Once again, Xuanyangzhi will be the Reverent Tower through this chapter. However, he does have connections with various NPCs through the course of this story arc. So, you will need to teleport back to the tower and speak to him on occasion.

1. Will speak to you again after defeating Huang Yen at Snowfall Palace, get Kong Wine x5
2. Hand over the Mad Doctor’s research notes, get special pill x5. Once you give them to him, you can’t give them to He Youzai
3. Return after completing Chapter 2 and he basically sends you to Chapter 3 areas.

The main thing you need to know is that the Mad Doctor’s Notes are a lockout for dialogue. You get the option to give them to either Xuanyangzhi or He Youzai. If you give them to He Youzai first, then you can hand them to Xuanyangzhi. But, if you give them to Xuanyangzhi first, you can’t give them to He Youzai. If you want all the lore drops, follow that order.

As it stands, it doesn’t seem to lead to any major choices or lockouts other than a lack of NPC dialogue. From our experience, you can miss the Chapter 2 dialogues and it doesn’t break either He Youzai’s storyline nor Xuanyangzhi’s either based on Chapter 4 events.

Xuanyangzi’s Chapter 3 meetings¶

Once again, There are a few event or item pick up triggers of Chapter 3. You will once again need to teleport back to Reverent Temple when the following events take place:

1. When you get the Zhenwu Temple Scriptures from the Pavilion of Knowledge. You can hand over the Zhenwu Temple Scriptures to him
2. Speaks to you again after defeating the end of Act 3 boss. Gives you 1x Blood of Changhong.
3. This part is optional but pretty worth it. At the end of Chapter 3, you can ignore the Storyteller and proceed through the cave. At the end of the cave, you find an optional area called the Overlook Ferry. The Ferry takes you to Bai Mansion, an optional island related to the Plain Warrioress and He Youzai’s storyline with your character. Defeating the boss on that island will give you another opportunity to talk to Xuanyangzi and get a Blood of Wangdi.

Xuanyangzi’s Chapter 4 Choice: Give him the Chisel or not?¶

In Chapter 4, you finally get some serious choices with Xuanyangzi. After you make your way to Reverent Tower from the start of Chapter 4, you can find Xuanyangzhi on the upper outside part of the Tower. Part way through the conversation, you get a choice of whether to give him the Jade Feather Chisel or not.

This is important because it does have connotations to three different endings.

1. If you want the Medicine ending achievement, give him the chisel.
2. If you’re looking for the Dream Sweet Deceit ending or Bound by Fate’s Threads endings, then don’t give him the chisel. Otherwise the choice can break those endings due to events in Chapter 5.

Xuanyangzi’s Chapter 5 meetings¶

If you progress into Chapter 5 regarding the choice, you will see Xuanyangzi at the start of the Chapter near the shrine. From there he disappears, and reappears later towards the end of Chapter 5.

Depending on what you’re going for, there’s a few different interactions here. We will give the details below in a spoiler box to detail what to expect.
