Frostpunk 2

Defeat the Frost or Embrace the Frost Choice

By
Ben Chard

Frostpunk 2’s epic story plays out over a Prologue and five nail-biting Chapters, and throughout, you’ll have to make some difficult choices that will forever impact the direction of New London and its citizens. As Chapter 1 comes to an end and you begin Chapter 2, you’ll have a critical choice to make, do you look to Defeat the Frost or continue to Embrace the Frost?

You will have to choose to either embrace or defeat the frost at the start of Chapter 2 in Frostpunk 2.

Your task during Chapter 1 was to find a new fuel source for New London, and you accomplished that with the Old Dreadnought and its oil. Now, the time has come to decide what you will do with that oil and as you may expect, each choice correlates with one of the two main ideologies in Frostpunk 2, Progress or Adaptation.

We Will Defeat the Frost

The top choice is aligned with any Progress-related Factions, such as the Stalwarts, and seeks to use the oil to further enhance the technology of New London and the prosperity of the city itself. Selecting this choice has the immediate consequences:

  • Stalwarts will approve, Pilgrims will disapprove
  • Unlocks Oil Pumps Generator Upgrade that uses Oil only
  • Unlocks Deep Melting Drills
  • Pilgrim’s Fervor is increased

By choosing to take on this choice, you’ll upgrade the Generator so that it can only take Oil as its fuel source, foregoing Coal any longer and preventing access from Steam in that playthrough. As a result, however, Oil will be far more effective and the fact that you can build Coal Liquefactors to convert any access Coal into Oil to be used once your main source runs out (which you should do as soon as possible).

More importantly to this route, you’ll gain access to build the Deep Melting Drill a crucial tool to make gathering resources much easier. You may have seen certain deposits around New London that have almost infinite stores, but to actually gain access to these, you’ll first need to construct and Extraction District over them, and then placing the Deep Melting Drill in there. You should look to do this as soon as possible in Chapter 2.

This mostly makes up your main tasks in Chapter 2 before the Whiteout hits, and you’ll find that should you make good use of the Oil from the Old Dreadnought, you won’t have many issues in maintaining a health stockpile of Fuel before that dreaded Whiteout hits, along with keeping both Food and Materials supplied with the infinite resource deposits nearby.

(1 of 2) You will upgrade the Generator to make better use of Oil only with defeat the frost.

We Will Embrace the Frost

So if the first choice is all about Progress and the Stalwarts, it goes to say that the bottom option is the reverse, Adaptation and the Pilgrims. This will make your Chapter 2 have a much different focus, instead making use of the bountiful resources in the Frostland to prepare for the Whiteout. Selecting this choice has the immediate consequences:

  • Pilgrims will approve, Stalwarts will disapprove
  • Unlocks Adaptive Pumps Generator Upgrade that uses any fuel
  • Unlocks Unlimited Output Frostland Settlements
  • Stalwarts’ Fervor is increased

By choosing this choice, you’ll upgrade the Generator so that it can make use of any type of fuel, that being Coal, Oil, or later, Steam. This gives you a much greater degree of flexibility but at the cost of never being able to fully utilize Oil to its best. As such, you’ll find that you’ll never truly get your Fuel stockpiles to that of a Steward that took and effectively used the other route.

Additionally, you won’t have access to the fantastic Deep Melting Drill from the other other route, which is one of the easier ways to Stockpile resources for New London. Instead, you get a much greater focus on the Settlements system in the Frostland, namely, being able to have Settlements provide unlimited resources. In general, before this choice, Settlements will only have a set amount of resources it can provide, but with the Embrace the Frost option, you’ll be able to make that unlimited. Similar outcome to the Deep Melting Drill, it just requires a bit more work to set up.

When you embrace the frost, you can turn settlements like this to have unlimited resources instead.

The rest of Chapter 2 before the Whiteout on this choice is all about learning how to make better use of Settlements. As part of your main objectives, you’ll be directly taught how to make use of Trails and Skyways, crucial tools for funneling resources back to New London and something you’ll want to make use of on any route. If you’re a big explorer fan, this is the route for you as you’ll get greater benefits from it.

There you have it; you now know the outcome of one of the more major choices in Frostpunk 2 and how it will forever shape the fuel situation in New London.
