If you go to a workbench and head over to the weapons tab, you can then select the mods menu at the bottom. Here, you can upgrade your weapon mods. These add better stats to the mods themselves, increasing their elemental power, elemental duration, physical weapon damage, if it is charge perk then it lowers the hits needed, typically by 4. If its a crit mod then it increases the critical hit chance by 1% each level.
Note that upgrading them will require the same mats used to craft them, alongside the appropriate level Field Manual Pages. So, you may need to do some Dark Zone farming. The vast majority, if not all will need Oxidizers too, so make sure to farm them to get a fully kitted out weapon.
Best Weapon Mods and Charms¶
In terms of the best weapon mods, we are big fans of the following:
- Slit
- Laceration
- Fling
- Puff
The main thing with Slit and Laceration is that thy are bleed focused weapon mods. These are really good, especially for really tough enemies like Chimeras and Special Infected. Getting one of the big guys to bleed out is a dramatic increase in DPS.
Fling is another favorite of ours. This when it crits really helps burst bigger enemies down if you’re not into the bleed build. It is also handy for pretty much one shotting some of the medium health special infected like Suiciders, Chargers, and other larger durability Biters. Combine it with Catapult and the critical hits with the explosions can do some massive burst damage to bosses too with heavy attack crits.
Puff is one of the best weapon mods, thanks to its charged up effect for greatly improving elemental damage. Activate it and then go crazy on your hits to get those super juicy elemental critical hits..
On the other hand, bleeding on armored opponents doesn’t work out too well. Instead, the fire damage or the toxic damage ones are better as they can be a consistent damage build up on top of the armor.
If you want something that is great at fighting hordes of enemies, then the lightning themed mods are the best. These things tend to ark, and if you are near water sources or metal, it conducts the lightning. Take the Voltage and the Spark modifiers for some strong AOE. Pair it with the final Combat skill as well, which does a 360 spin cleave attack with your melee weapon to really start a chain lightning attack with a strong crit or activation when using this weapon for some extremely strong damage output.
