What is Elden Ring: Nightreign?

Elden Ring: Nightreign is a cooperative action role-playing game set in the world of Elden Ring, developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Announced at The Game Awards 2024, this standalone adventure shifts the franchise’s focus towards cooperative survival gameplay. Players will explore a transformed version of Limgrave, now called Limveld, facing an ever-changing environment filled with danger. The game is scheduled for release on May 30, 2025, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Unlike the open-ended, single-player experience of Elden Ring, Nightreign is designed for three-player co-op, encouraging teamwork as players fight through three in-game days to prepare for a final boss battle. While it can be played solo, the game’s mechanics are built around collaboration, with each player controlling a uniquely skilled hero whose abilities combine to create powerful synergies. Players must manage resources, engage in strategic combat, and survive the dangers of the ever-changing night.

A major gameplay twist is the shrinking gameplay area, reminiscent of battle royale mechanics. As time passes, the environment itself becomes increasingly hazardous, forcing players to adapt and move strategically. Each in-game day ends with a challenging minor boss, and defeating it resets the playable area, offering new challenges and opportunities. This dynamic structure ensures that no two playthroughs feel the same, with procedural elements keeping each session fresh and unpredictable.

FromSoftware veteran Junya Ishizaki, who previously worked on Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring, leads the development of Nightreign. However, unlike Elden Ring, fantasy author George R.R. Martin is not involved in this project. Despite this, the game retains the dark, atmospheric storytelling that FromSoftware is known for, with a world shaped by mystery, peril, and the looming threat of the night. Players will uncover hidden secrets and forge their own legends in a realm where survival depends on wit, skill, and cooperation.

With its innovative blend of Elden Ring’s deep RPG mechanics and a fresh cooperative survival structure, Nightreign promises to be a thrilling experience for both longtime fans and newcomers. The game’s evolving world, intense battles, and emphasis on teamwork set it apart from its predecessor while staying true to FromSoftware’s signature challenge and depth. Whether playing solo or alongside allies, players will rise together to face the darkness when Elden Ring: Nightreign launches in May 2025.

“Revel in the Night”

Elden Ring: Nightreign is an entertaining multiplayer game that brings an urge to keep putting more time into it. But with only one map on offer, it was outstaying its welcome in this test, let alone the final release.
