You can delete your Gamer Guides account yourself at any time, from the app or from the website. You do not need to contact us first, and you do not need an active membership to do it.
Deleting from the app
- Open the Gamer Guides app.
- Tap your avatar at the top right of any screen to open the menu.
- Choose Settings, then Account.
- Tap Delete account.
- Confirm when asked. You will be signed out on every device.
Deleting on the website
- Sign in at gamerguides.com.
- Go to your account settings.
- Choose Delete account and confirm.
If you cannot sign in
If you have lost access to your account, or you have already removed the app, you can still ask us to delete it. Email [email protected] from the address the account was registered with, and tell us the username or email address of the account you want deleted. If you are still able to sign in, our contact form reaches the same place.
We may ask you to confirm ownership of the account before we act, so that nobody can have somebody else's account deleted.
What is deleted
Deleting your account is immediate. We erase the files you uploaded and permanently anonymise the account itself, so that nothing left behind identifies you:
- Your email address is replaced with an unusable placeholder, and your password is overwritten with a random value that nobody holds. Neither can be recovered, by you or by us.
- Your username and profile address become “Deleted User” followed by random characters.
- Your profile picture and any other files you uploaded to your profile are erased from our servers.
- Your profile details are cleared: real name, date of birth, country, gender, pronouns, your blurbs, your platforms and the gaming service usernames you listed.
- The IP address recorded when you registered is cleared.
- Your Google sign-in link is removed, so the account can no longer be reached that way.
- Any active subscription bought on our website is cancelled first. We will not close an account while it is still being billed.
What is kept, and for how long
Some things are not removed, either because they no longer identify you or because we are required to keep them:
- Comments and community contributions. Anything you posted publicly, including comments and map markers you submitted for everyone to use, stays on the site so that conversations and maps other readers rely on do not fall apart. It is no longer attributed to you: it shows against the anonymised account. If you want a specific comment removed, delete it before you close your account, or ask us.
- Your own reading data. Bookmarks, reading progress, collected markers and private map notes stay attached to the closed account. Nobody can sign in to it and none of it is shown to anyone, so it is no longer linked to you.
- Billing records. Kept for as long as tax and accounting law requires, which in the UK is generally six years.
- Security and technical logs. Kept only as long as needed for security and abuse prevention, then deleted or anonymised.
How long it takes
The account is anonymised the moment you confirm, and your uploaded files are erased at the same time. There is no waiting period and no way to undo it.
Our backups are rotated and overwritten on a regular cycle, so a copy of the account as it was may persist in a backup until that cycle completes. Backups are not used to restore individual accounts and are not consulted for anything but disaster recovery.
If you have a question about any of this, or you want a copy of your data before you delete it, email [email protected]. Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect and why.
