The story behind this painting hanging in The Astronomy Wing
The Patronus of Illyian:
The young man in the center is Illyius, a shy, penniless orphan wizard who lived in a remote mountain village that was routinely threatened and blackmailed by a powerful Dark wizard named Raczidian (depicted in the painting looming in the background).
In the story, Raczidian possessed an army of Dementors that he used to terrorize the village throughout Illyius’ childhood
During Illyius’ 17 year, the village elders taught the villagers how to cast the Patronus Charm to protect themselves. During the training, as the villagers were practicing casting their Patronus Charms one by one, when it came time for Illyius to cast his, it manifested to his deep embarrassment as a tiny mouse. The villagers all mocked him, believing his tiny mouse was completely useless against such an imposing dark threat.
Armed with their new defenses, the village stood united against Raczidian, and politely bade him to “bugger off you bloody sod”
Enraged at the villagers’ refusal, Raczidian proceeded to attack with his army of Dementors. The villagers elders attempted to cast their powerful Patronuses (like badgers, eagles, bears and wolves), but their defensive lines quickly buckled under the sheer mass of the massive Dementor horde. Stepping forward towards the line of Dementors with the swagger and confidence of a man with an overly-full codpiece, Illyius conjured his tiny mouse Patronus. Despite its size, the mouse shone with pure, righteously blinding light, cutting through the darkness and single-handedly routing the Dementors.
In his fury, Raczidian attempted to cast his own Patronus to counter it. However, because he was an evil dark wizard lacking a pure soul, the spell backfired horribly, and the last report by the villagers was the seething eruption of maggots from his wand, which systematically consumed him alive on the spot.
