Sonic Superstars

Sonic Superstars is a 2023 platform game developed by Arzest and Sonic Team and published by Sega. It returns to the classic side-scrolling gameplay reminiscent of the Sonic the Hedgehog games from the Sega Genesis era. In the game, players can choose from four characters, including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, each with their unique abilities. The objective is to complete side-scrolling levels, defeat Doctor Eggman, and confront Fang the Hunter. The game introduces power-ups that players can acquire by collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds, and it supports both single-player and multiplayer modes, including four-player local multiplayer and various player-versus-player competitions.

The development of “Sonic Superstars” began in 2021, with the goal of modernizing Sonic’s traditional side-scrolling formula while retaining the essence of the classic games. Sonic Team collaborated with Arzest, a studio founded by Sonic co-creator Naoto Ohshima. The game features 2.5D graphics, a new art style, and innovations in gameplay. It was released for multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, on October 17, 2023, and received positive reviews from critics for its faithful return to classic Sonic gameplay.
