The scriptures were true – the world has come to an end.

It’s been days, maybe weeks. However many. Cellar walls seem to be moving, closing in on me. The stench of rot is getting stronger. Could be remnants of my food. God willing. Otherwise, it’s… them.

I can’t make myself leave.

The pestilence, it takes us so quickly. I spoke with Rina at dawn. The black swelling appeared hours later. Her skin grew hot, then pallor settled in. The dead air got inside her. She was gone by dusk.

The medic told us to sweat it out. When Adina cried out the next morning, I tried the oven.
