The Hungarians's Campaign

Text

The times of legendary heroes roaming these lands may not have ended with the decline of the ancient Arimaspians.

Not too long ago, 400 or so years back, a number of men claimed to be descendants of those great warriors. Their names were Gelou, Glad, Salan, and Menumorut, and each of them ruled his own domain in the Carpathians, to great success.

And yet they all had to bend the knee before the Hungarians. Gelou was killed by Teteny, one of the seven famous Hungarian chieftains. Glad’s army – though sizeable and consisting of Cumans, Bulgarians, and Vlachs – was destroyed in a cruel battle near Timis river. Salan even had help from the Byzantine emperor’s troops, but that wasn’t enough, either. After his defeat, Menumorut offered his daughter to the Hungarian ruler’s son, which granted Menumorut a peaceful life in charge of a patch of land called Biharia.

After the Hungarians’s glorious campaign, new legends started to circulate in the region. According to some, Gelou, Salan, Glad, and Menumorut may not have been the only ones who had Arimaspian blood in their veins.
