The Scarlet Sorrow

Text

There was once a young woman who lost the man she loved. They buried him beneath a quiet hill, under a crooked tree, where the wind always seemed to be sighing. Every day she came to his grave. She would kneel by the stone, speak to him softly, and clear the weeds that crept too near.

One evening, as dusk blurred the fields, she sat there whispering of her pain into the merciless silence. A vine, thorny and wild, had tangled itself around the stone. She reached to tear it free – and the thorns dug deep into her hand. Blood dripped onto the grave.

Suddenly, a shadow formed behind the headstone, and in it, she saw him – her beloved.

Though he did not speak and could not stay, there was not a doubt in her heart. For a moment, he was there, real enough to reach for.

She understood then: the blood had called him. And so, she returned the next night. And the next. Each evening she opened a new wound, letting her life spill into the soil.

Little by little, she faded – skin paling, voice weakening – but it mattered not. The night the last drop she had sank into the ground, and she herself collapsed onto the grave, the wind that sighed through the graveyard carried no mourning.

She had gone to join him – and they were together forevermore.
