Vera,

Erdene said you made no secret of your displeasure at seeing her again at your door. You must be feeling it once again, reading yet another letter delivered by her hands.

I apologise. But I simply can’t risk a visit. Not yet.

Anna has taken to watching me like an anxious cat since my fall the other day. Hovering, grabbing my arm as though to feel if there’s still a pulse at the wrist. She can see and sense something’s wrong – I don’t quite blame her. But I’ve not been able even to walk the orchard alone – she’d lose her mind if I said I was going hunting.

I have the hooks for your trellis ready and waiting. I’m sending one with this letter – consider it proof of the truth in my words, and a promise.
