Wash the wound with hot wine or vinegar. If none is at hand, fresh urine of a sober man will suffice. Do not let the wound close until all the filth’s out.

Bind the wound tight with linen or shirt hem. If the blood keeps pouring, apply cobwebs or moss. Lacking those, press down on it with your boot until the bleeding stops or the man faints.

If struck by iron – lay upon the cut a slice of raw onion or a poultice of boiled goose fat and ground sage.

If it goes black, chant the Lord’s Prayer and burn it with hot steel to chase away the demons within it.

If his guts come out, rinse them in wine and call a priest for the Last Rites.
