What is Dragon Age: Inquisition?
Dragon Age: Inquisition is an action role-playing game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. It is the third major game in the Dragon Age series and follows Dragon Age II. It came out in November 2014 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, after first being announced in September 2012 under the name Dragon Age III: Inquisition.
The story centers on a player character called the Inquisitor. A peace Conclave near the village of Haven, meant to pause the Mage-Templar war, ends in an explosion that tears a hole in the sky known as the Breach, and demons pour through it. The Inquisitor sets out to close the Breach and calm the unrest across the continent of Thedas, making decisions along the way that can change the state of the world.
Players pick a race for the Inquisitor (human, dwarf, elf, or Qunari, the last playable for the first time in the series) and one of three classes: warrior, mage, or rogue. The world is split into several semi-open regions that can be explored freely, with mounts for faster travel. Side activities include sealing Fade rifts, capturing keeps, and setting up camps. The Inquisition’s base, Skyhold, holds a war table for unlocking locations and progressing the story, as well as a crafting area for armor and weapons.
Alongside the single-player campaign, the game has a co-operative multiplayer mode in which players take the role of Agents of the Inquisition. Progress in multiplayer does not carry over to the campaign. Through the Dragon Age Keep online tool, players can set out the major choices from the first two games and import that world state without replaying them. Several story downloadable content packs were released after launch.
BioWare began development in 2011 on the Frostbite 3 engine and aimed to combine elements of the first two Dragon Age games, partly in response to player feedback on Dragon Age II. Trevor Morris composed the soundtrack. Critics gave the game positive reviews, praising its exploration, combat, writing, and characters, and it became one of BioWare’s most commercially successful games and won several Game of the Year awards.
