Completing the main quest The Way of the Shamisen will unlock the the next main quest in The Kitsune questline, Poison and Lies, which has a few more puzzles to navigate. This page will provide a walkthrough for the aforementioned quest with a focus on its puzzles in Ghost of Yotei.

Page Breakdown

Spy on the camp to locate an ingress point, then sneak in when Oyuki distracts a guard.

Infiltrate Sentinel Forest

First step in this quest is to head to the Sentinel Forest Camp and rendezvous with Oyuki, who can be found on a ledge overlooking the camp. Talk to her, spy on the camp and look at some points of interest, then head over to the weak section of palisade you spotted earlier and let Oyuki work her magic, then sneak through when the coast is clear.

Note the fox statues near the tree,

and light the stone lanterns with fox statues in similar poses near them.

Tree Brazier Puzzle

Advance through the forest until you reach a tree with a pedestal under it, which bears three fox statues, two lying down, one howling. This tree is ringed by barren stone lanterns, but to the left is a brazier. Fish a torch out of the brazier and use it to light the lanterns with a fox statue near them - light the lanterns with a fox statue near it matching one of the ones of the pedestal. From the left of the tree and working our way clockwise, these are the lantern-statue combinations you’ll find:

  • Lying Fox
  • Sitting Fox
  • Lying Fox
  • Howling Fox
  • Paw-raised Fox

Light the lanterns with the Lying Foxes and the Howling Fox to trigger a scene, opening a way deeper into the forest.

(1 of 3) Find some fox statues near a bridge,

Bridge Puzzle

Press on to reach a bridge, defeat some Nine Tails that ambush you, then look near the bridge to find three more fox statues: one lying, one sitting and one with its paw up. To the right of the fox statues you’ll find a raised paw fox statue in an alcove with the “left” symbol yotei_icon_left.png near it, across the bridge and to the right you’ll find a sitting statue with the “forward” symbol yotei_icon_forward.png near it and under the bridge you’ll find a lying fox with the “right” symbol yotei_icon_right.png near it. With those clues gathered, the solution is as follows:

  • Lying Fox: Rotate to face right.
  • Sitting Fox: Rotate to face forward (away from the bridge, towards the bamboo)
  • Paw-raised Fox: Rotate to face left.

Set the statues to the correct orientation and a new path will open up.

At the first lantern trap puzzle, follow Oyuki right past the fox statue,

and left past a broken stone with more symbols on it.

First Lantern Trap Puzzle

Continue forward a short distance until you reach a stretch of forest lined by lit lanterns, where Oyuki offers to take the lead. Follow her through this lantern puzzle, but note the first, central lantern-pedestal contains the symbols “death” and “left” yotei_icon_death.png yotei_icon_left.png, which is why Oyuki wisely leads you to the right. Further ahead, on a broken stone in the middle of the area, you’ll find the symbols “death” and “right” yotei_icon_death.png yotei_icon_right.png, so follow Oyuki as she zigs over to the left. A third stone ahead is broken, but Oyuki seems unperturbed and she continues forward on the left side of the area. When you reach the narrow part of the forest ahead, you’re safe…for now.

The locked door past the first lantern trap puzzle isn’t much of a problem to open - remove the fox statues nearest the door from their pedestal,

and swap them out with each other.

Conforming Foxes Door Puzzle

Crawl under some boulders and after some walking chatter with Oyuki you’ll find yourself at another sealed door. Barely a puzzle, this one - there are four fox statues, two on either side of the door, and the two nearest the door can be moved. The two further statues that can’t be moved serve as guides: you just need to move the statue on the left over to the right and the statue on the right over to the left. One the places are swapped and the two pairs of statues are facing the door, it’ll open. Don’t need a degree in puzzleonomy to figure this one out!

At the second Lantern Trap Puzzle, Atsu will take the lead - head left past the fox statue,

and right past the stone.

Second Lantern Trap Puzzle

Enter a cave, use your grapple to pull down an obstruction, then continue on a winding but linear path ahead, dispatching two groups of Nine Tails and activating another fox statue to open a door - no puzzle here. Eventually the good times must end, however, as you’ll soon find another forest corridor housing a second lantern trap puzzle. This one works the same way as the first - stones in the middle will warn you of death and if you know your symbols, you’ll avoid pain by sticking to the correct path.

The first symbols - carved on the pedestal supporting a fox statue - says “death” and “right” yotei_icon_death.png yotei_icon_right.png while the second symbols - found on a humbler stone - warn of “death” and “left” yotei_icon_death.png yotei_icon_left.png, so switch over to the right after clearing the fox statue.

Find The Kitsune’s Operation

Enter and exit a cave, go up a slope, cross some beams, and you’ll find yourself stopped by a locked door. Turn right to find a climbable cliff - at least, a cliff climbable with Oyuki’s help - then cut through some bamboo, squeeze through a cleft and slide down a rocky slope, then slice through three more bamboo barriers to reach The Kitsune’s operation deep in these woods. Peep on their less-than-appetizing crops via your spyglass, and when the operation goes south due to foreseen intervention, slide down a slope and charge through the artillery after your target. There’s no point in fighting anybody here, so just head uphill into a burning building where you’ll trigger a scene.

You’ll have to fight a boss here, but it’s mostly scripted, more of a showcase of a weapon which Atsu isn’t acclimated to and has no real defense against. After the fight you’ll have another walk and talk with Oyuki, albeit with the roles somewhat reversed this time around, and once you escape the forest you’ll get more revelatory scenes, which culminate in this quest’s end and the beginning of the next quest, The Tale of the Kitsune, but there isn’t much in the way of puzzles there (although you do learn the useful “Listen” ability!), so for the next puzzle-laden main quest we’ll skip ahead to [The Kitsune’s Fate].
