A Goodbye Letter

My son,

By the time you read this, I’ll be gone already. I’m sorry but the pain is too much. I don’t want to end up like the rest of our neighbours – vomiting and shitting myself to death. But you’re young – I know you can survive this. Take the money and food I’ve left and get out of Svartrau.

The guards kill anyone who tries to break out, but I have a route planned for you – through the roofs. When I was a young lad I used to walk them all the time, so I drew you a map. Use it and get to safety. Skender’s dogs won’t expect that.

With my last breath I pray to God for your protection.
