On Pillories

My dearest vermin,

I hear that some of you, when assigned to guard the pillories, drive gawkers away. A grave mistake! The common folk need entertainment like they need bread! So don’t shoo them away, don’t give them sullen looks. To the contrary! Encourage them to tease the prisoners, pelt them with rotten apples, in short: let them have their fun! The more they laugh, the less they will resent us.
