What is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt?
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an open-world action role-playing game from the Polish studio CD Projekt Red, published by CD Projekt. It first launched on May 19, 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC. A Nintendo Switch version followed in October 2019, and a Complete Edition arrived on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in December 2022. It is the third game in The Witcher series and continues from The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.
The story draws on the fantasy novels of Andrzej Sapkowski and is set on the Continent, a world shaped by Slavic folklore where humans live alongside elves, dwarves, and monsters. Players take the role of Geralt of Rivia, a witcher who hunts monsters for pay, as he searches for his adopted daughter Ciri, who is fleeing the spectral riders of the Wild Hunt. His journey unfolds against a war between the Nilfgaardian Empire and the northern kingdoms.
Played from a third-person view, the game mixes sword combat, magic, and exploration. Geralt carries a steel sword for human foes and a silver sword for monsters, along with a crossbow and bombs, and can switch between quick and heavy attacks, block, and counter. He also wields five magical Signs, including the telekinetic Aard, the fiery Igni, and the protective Quen. Quests reward experience and gold, which go toward new abilities and better gear.
The game is a single-player experience built around choice. Dialogue options and key decisions alter the state of the world and the fate of its characters, leading to different endings. Two story expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, were released after launch, and a Game of the Year Edition from August 2016 bundles the base game with both expansions and all downloadable content.
Development started in 2011 and took about three and a half years, using the studio’s REDengine 3. The score was mainly composed by Marcin Przybyłowicz. The game received wide critical acclaim for its story, world, and combat, won more than 200 game of the year awards, and has sold over 65 million units. A free remastered version for existing owners launched in September 2026, and a third expansion, Songs of the Past, is planned for 2027.

Prices come from our retail partners. We may earn a commission when you buy through these links, which never changes the price you pay or the order offers appear in. How this works
How offers are ranked
Offers are ranked by price, not by the commission Gamer Guides receives.
Cheapest confirmed price first. Offers we can confirm are in stock come before offers whose availability is uncertain, and any offer without a current price sits at the bottom.
Prices exclude delivery unless a retailer states otherwise, so the cheapest listed price is not always the cheapest delivered price. Prices and availability change, and a price we cannot re-verify is hidden rather than shown as though it were current.
