Kostel acts before he thinks. He’s lucky he had a caring mum, Lina, who always took his side whenever things got out of hand, which usually meant him getting into a fight. My father said once, ‘the reason Kostel will never change is because there’s always someone to get him back on his feet’. I don’t know if he was right, but it continued even after Kostel’s mum died. Her nephew, Vlad, picked up where she left off, and started looking after the lad – partly because he’s family, but also as a friend, I think. Sometimes I get the feeling that Vlad encourages Kostel’s rashness instead of reining it in – but for what reason, I don’t know.
