Vault Key Fragment Locations - The Fadefields
When you reach Carcadia Burn, you’ll find one of the Borderlands 4 quests by approaching a group of people chatting near a vending machine. One of those is Penelope Streams, and up-and-coming news reporter who thinks she’s onto something. Penelope has overheard people known as Vault Gatherers talking about a Legendary Vending Machine. The only thing is, they can’t seem to find it. You’ll have to track down several vending machines, crack their puzzles and collect a code, which leads you to the rumoured vending machine’s location.
To unlock the Vend of the Line you need to first complete the Siege and Destroy campaign mission. Afterwards, you can collect the quest at the vending machine just outside of the main Carcadia Burn hub area.
(1 of 3) The Vend of the Line quest is near a vending machine at Carcadia Burn.
After collecting the quest, the Vault Gatherer will give you an important hint that “the colour is the key,” and you’ll have to inspect the vending machine close by. Just look around the back of the vending machine and you’ll see four symbols in different colours with a line through them. This means that you need to sell each of those colour weapons in the right order to progress the quest. Luckily, even if you couldn’t figure that out, the quest holds your hand here and gives you direct instructions. To progress sell green, sell green, sell blue, then sell blue.
The code for the vending machine is on the back.
Afterwards, you’ll need to seek out three more vending machines and crack their codes for them to spit out the next part of the long code you need to find the Legendary Vending Machine. Don’t worry about remembering the digits the vending machines give you, chances are they’re not in order, and Penelope Streams will reveal the full code to you towards the end of the quest line anyway.
The closest vending machine to your location is on top of a roof in the Ruined Sumplands. Jump up to it, and you’ll see it’s having a power issue. Ascend the rooftops further and head to the right to fix the power problem. Afterwards, jump to the ledge behind the vending machine and look through the gap to discover the code. This vending machine has no contents, but the code wants you to buy green, buy purple, buy blue, buy green. In order to do this, sell those colour guns to the machine in any order, and then buy them again using the buy back feature.
(1 of 4) Second vending machine location.
The next vending machine is through a tunnel into Crumblehall, where you’ll find an unfortunate Vault Gatherer trapped underneath the vending machine. You’ll also notice some arrows on top of the vending machine. Note that the vending machine has fallen over, so rather than following the direction they’re pointing in, you’ll need to jump vertically to ascend the building. Once you reach the top, follow more arrows until you see a small window you can look through. The code says you’ll need to sell purple, sell purple, sell orange, sell orange, but the Vault Gatherer trapped beneath the machine will handle this for you and all you need to do is listen to the audio.

The third vending machine is located in the Lopside area, and you’ll see a Vault Gatherer Scout trying to input the code already. Unfortunately for him, he’s not getting very far. Head through the door to the left of the building by crouching under the beam to find the code. Frustratingly, he won’t get out of the way to let you use the machine. He eventually gets the code right, but the vending machine arms itself with “extra-special safety measures.” Thankfully, this means you can melee the customer or shoot the machine, causing it to forcefully remove the Scout, and progress the quest. The code is sell green , sell purple, sell blue, sell purple. As the final clue, you now have the password which is 33-1 96-8 W. These are coordinates which lead you to the Legendary Vending Machine’s location.
(1 of 3) Final vending machine location
The Legendary Vending Machine can most easily be reached by traveling to the Grindstone of the Worthy area and then following Echo’s trail to the Dusty Dangler. Clear out the enemies, and you’ll see a vending machine on the right-hand side of the building. This vending machine has a code of sell green, sell blue, sell purple, sell orange. Don’t worry, you can use the buy back feature to retrieve these if you want to. After doing so, you’ll be tasked with following a nearby wire down the side of a cliff and near a cave. You’ll be faced with a bunch of Vault Gatherers who also seem to have cracked the codes and found the Legendary Vending Machine’s location.
(1 of 4) Legendary Vending Machine
Follow the short path into the cave, where you’ll find the machine itself. Shoot it, and it will grow legs, gain the name Vend Zane, and begin retaliating, taking out the team of Vault Gatherers. Take down its health bar, and it will malfunctin and crash to the ground. Remember that there have been codes involved with every single vending machine so far. On the ground near where the Legendary Vending Machine first was when you entered the area is another code. It reads sell green, sell green, sell green, buy orange. If you sell three green items to the vending machine before buying a legendary item, you will earn the secret achievement All Things Vend.

If you successfully input the code and get the All Things Vend achievement, you’ll also collect a photograph of Zane and Levaine from the floor after the vending machine becomes inaccessible again. Take this photo to the Ruined Sumplands and find Zane inside Moxxi’s bar. Handing him the photo, he’ll explain exactly why the Legendary Vending Machine exists.
