Sword Missions (Udun)

Arise

Combat Drains are useful for quicly replenishing your Elf-Shot (left), and in this mission in particular, shooting explosive Grog Barrels with a Fire Arrow can result in a lot of dead Uruks (right).

Location: Udun, Southern Udun Pass

Reward: 400 XP, 250 Mirian (+50 Mirian)

Objective: Fight off the Uruk ambush

Bonus Objecive: Combat Drain 5 Uruks

“He was surrounded on all sides by an overwhelming force. Standing his ground, he faced down every foe until the will of his attackers was broken.”

Another “fight off a horde of Uruks” mission, except unlike in “Cutting the Lines” and “Into the Pit”, you’ll face a more diverse group of Uruks this time around. Considering this, and how useful Elf-Shot is at getting rid of troublesome foes, performing Combat Drains comes highly recommended… even moreso because doing it five times is the bonus objective. You have a campfire and some explosive barrels you can exploit to clear out a number of Uruks (especially handy if you use Fire Arrow), which, honestly, makes this all too easy.

Cutting the Lines

Location: Udun, Durthang West

Reward: 400 XP, 150 Mirian (+50 Mirian)

Objective: Kill all of the Trainees

Bonus Objecive: Melee Execute 5 Uruks

“Descending on the enemy camp, he cut off the Dark Lord’s supply of new recruits. On that day, the trainees learned only of death.”

Another simple mission, just go to the specified location and kill Uruks. That’s pretty much what you’ve been doing this whole game. Be sure to execute a few to complete the bonus objective… like that’s really even much of an optional task. It’s like asking to score headshots during an archery trial… that’s not a bonus objective, that’s just asking us to do something that makes the task of killing Uruks go faster. You’d have a harder time NOT performing five Executions.

Into the Pit

Into the Pit will provide you with valuable combat experience. Learning to Counter multiple attackers at once (left) is necessary to achieving high Hit Streaks. Fight smart, and you should have little trouble breaking the three digit mark (right).

Location: Udun, Uruk Proving Grounds

Reward: 400 XP, 250 Mirian (+50 Mirian)

Objective: Defeat the Warrior Horde (50 Uruks)

Bonus Objecive: Reach a Hit Streak of 100

“Trapped and cast into a pit by the Dark Lord, he was to be cut down to show that he was not immortal. He slew every enemy sent at him, including his captors.”

Simple enough. Slaughter 50 Uruks and try to get a Hit Streak of 100. If you have the “Execute” ability and are decent at combat in this game, the former should be little trouble. The latter can be trickier, but if you follow the general rul of combat in Shadow of Mordor; methodical, not mashing, you can do it. Just attack once or twice, wait for and counter the inevitable attacks from flanking Uruks, and when you can peform an Execution, do so. The only thing you have to watch out for are simultaneous attacks, which can be countered by pressing (Triangle) again.

Nameless Things

Build up your Hit Streak and perform a Wraith Flash to quickly eliminate a number of Ghuls-the magic number this mission is ten (left). Ghul Matrons require attack/dodge combos to charge your Hit Streak, after which Executions deal decent damage.

Location: Udun, Udun Crossing

Reward: 400 XP, 150 Mirian (+50 Mirian)

Objective: Clear 3 Ghul Nests

Bonus Objecive: Kill 10 Ghuls with a single Wraith Flash

“When night fell, his troops were being taken by Ghuls. Alone he descended into their foulest hive and slew every beast, including their matron.”

This mission tasks you with heading into some caves and killing a bunch of Ghuls. Not too hard, you know the drill; smack some Ghuls until your Hit Streak is charged, then use Wraith Flash (Square + X). When your Hit Streak is charged, roll into a concentrated group of Ghuls and use Wraith Flash and you should satisfy the bonus objective. Once you’ve slain most of the last group, you’ll have to fight a Ghul Matron, who is a more annoying foe than your typical Ghuls, as they automatically counter any attacks with an unblockable attack. Use Elf-Shot to whittle them down, and be prepared to attack, then dodge backwards, and repeat until you can perform an Execution, which will deal some good damage to them.

The Fell Beast

Location: Udun, Barrows of Udun

Reward: 400 XP, 150 Mirian (+50 Mirian)

Objective: Kill the patrolling Guards before their reach their Strongholds

Bonus Objecive: Kill 5 Uruks with Caragor Bite Attacks

“He rode through their ranks astride a monstrous beast, cutting through them like a blade and spreading terror wherever he went.”

Another Caragor mission, this one is very similar to the Bow Mission “The Storm of War” . Ride around and kill three groups of patrolling Uruks. Your Caragor is stupidly vulnerable to Uruk attacks, and you should probably just dismount when you find a group and fight on foot. This will allow the Caragor to maul Uruks on its own without making it the only target for Uruk aggression. Shooting the shield-bearing Uruk with Elf-Shot might also be a good idea.
