“In my many years of service in Duke Casimir’s retinue, I’ve met quite a few skilled warriors, but one deserves special recognition – a quiet man from Silesia we only knew as Carnifex. A weird nickname, I know. It’s Latin, so I asked one priest about its meaning – he said it literally means ‘flesh-maker’ or ‘butcher’.

But the priest told me it also meant a public executioner in Rome. So it really made sense, considering the Silesian’s favourite way of killing people – he was really good at cutting off their heads.”
