“And it was so that King Hammurabi waged a war against Rim-Sin, the ruler of Larsa. During this conflict, he found himself in need of a swift messenger. The missives he wanted sent out were of grave importance. And in order for the king’s plan to work, they had to be delivered within a fortnight. So he proclaimed thusly: ‘If a runner comes forth who’ll manage this feat, I shall reward them with titles and gold. However, if they fail me, their life will be forfeit.’ At first, no volunteer appeared.”
