“Ibn Hayyān’s work is a marvellous breakthrough, but now I see it’s only a stepping stone. For months now I’ve been pondering this question: if, when it comes to the arcane, pain and healing are so intertwined, isn’t it obvious that so must be life and death? What if one could use the vitality slipping away from a dying person and, before it disperses into finality, snatch it for himself?
