When they finally got him to the medicus tent, I thought he was already a corpse. There was no single spot on his body left unbloodied. His right arm was hanging on a strip of skin. He was missing one eye. I paid a priest to get Dietrich his last rites – but when the holy man leaned over my dying friend, it turned out that he was not so dying after all. Believing that he was still on the battlefield and mistaking the priest for a corpse robber, Dietrich grabbed him with his only available arm, drew the poor man close and headbutted him!

I mean, what a resilient bastard. Not only did he survive wounds that would have killed a lesser man, he was still willing to fight. Dietrich survived that day – true, he lost his arm, but it didn’t stop him from fighting again and again. A one-eyed, one-armed warrior… I would not believe it if he wasn’t my friend. He is still alive, as far as I know. A living proof that some fuckers are simply too stubborn to die.
