The toughest son-of-a-bitch I knew during my fighting days? Now that would be Dietrich of Rothenburg. Wasn’t a particularly big fellow, but he would simply not go down in a skirmish, no matter how many wounds he received. So what kept him alive? Mostly his stubborness, I presume. Never have I encountered a more bull-headed man. Once he made a decision, he’d stick to it no matter what. I imagine that ‘not dying’ was one such resolution.

One time, Dietrich and I took part in the Battle of Kressenbrunn. We fought on the Hungarian side – got nothing against the Bohemians, but King Béla simply paid better. Well, as you probably know, greed was not a good advisor in this case. We really got our arses kicked that day. I was lucky as my commander positioned me far from the thick of it.
