Thalmudak Strategy |
Thalmudak Attacks¶
Note that this boss strategy is for the proper fight with Thalmudak at the end of the Chapter. Not the fight you briefly fought earlier on, where he was invincible. Thalmudak is a fearsome foe that packs a punch, but is relatively easy to avoid, due to him wielding his unique golden Trollslayer Greatsword.
Aside from his regular melee attacks, he has access to brief teleport attacks and various lightning-based attacks. Before we talk about the strategy, let’s take a look at his attacks.
Jumping Slam¶
This is a two-hit attack where Thalmudak will perform an overhead slam before jumping in the air to perform another slam. Simply dodge to the side for the first attack and then dodge/run behind him for the second. This will leave him open for a charged attack or a couple of normal attacks. This attack is one of your best ways to deal damage to him, and he’ll use it a lot.
(1 of 3) At first, Thalmudak will perform an overhead slash.
Sweep Combo¶
Thalmudak will sweep his greatsword side to side in a two-hit attack. Either dodge these by dodging just as the attack is about to hit, or roll backwards to avoid both. This is generally his basic attack when he’s not performing a special attack. You’ll see a lot of the Jumping Slam and Sweep Combo attacks throughout the battle.
(1 of 2) Thalmudak will use two sweeping attacks back to back.

Lightning Slam¶
Thalmudak will briefly hover in the air, imbuing himself with the power of lightning, giving him a purple hue. After this, he will use the sword like a pogo stick with each hit on the ground unleashing lightning bolts in every cardinal direction.
These bolts will travel across the arena until they dissipate. To avoid the attack, get some distance, position yourself between the bolts, and wait out the attack. He will do this two or three times in quick succession.
(1 of 2) Thalmudak will get a purple hue and jump on his sword to create a shockwave of bolts that travel outward.

Teleport Charge¶
This normally happens when Thalmudak has his lightning power. He will frequently teleport in front of you and follow it up with an attack, either a Sweep Combo or an overhead slam.
Arguably, the hardest attack to avoid, as he’ll appear in front of you almost immediately, and the charge itself does minor damage. The only tip to avoid this is to dodge the second you see him blink toward you with a golden hue.
At times, you’ll see a golden hue immediately followed by teleport. This will deal damage.
Sword Throw¶
Sometimes throughout the battle, Thalmudak will perform the Sweep Combo attack, but then he’ll throw his sword at you across the arena. He will then teleport to the sword’s location and begin attacking again.
For the most part, he won’t hit you when he throws the sword, provided you are moving, and you can punish him by running over to the sword, as he’ll take a second or two to pick it up, giving you some free attacks.
(1 of 2) Later on, after a sweep attack, he’ll throw his sword at you.

Leaping Sweep Slam¶
This attack begins with Thalmudak performing the first hit of the Sweep Combo attack, but the second attack will change, and he’ll hurl the sword in the air before jumping up to catch it and slam it down at your location. You can avoid this attack by dodging the first sweep and then running behind him as he lands for the second.
(1 of 2) Another attack he will use after the first sweep attack is he’ll launch his sword into the air.

Lightning Storm¶
Arguably Thalmudak’s main special attack. He will travel across the arena in a purple orb and stop in the center before unleashing numerous lightning bolts throughout the arena, similar to the Lightning Slam attack. The difference here is that there are a lot more bolts, and his sword will gain lightning abilities, where he’ll keep unleashing beams of lightning at your location.
For this attack, you want to get to the back of the arena and stay mobile. Weave between the bolts and move side to side to avoid the beams from his sword. When the bolts reach the back of the arena, they will go around the back of it until returning to Thalmudak. Note that when he’s done, he’ll slam down at you with his lightning-imbued sword; simply move or dodge to the side to avoid it.
(1 of 4) When you see a lightning orb, get to the back of the arena and be prepared to dodge numerous attacks.
Thalmudak Boss Strategy¶
As you can see, he has a fair amount of attacks, but as mentioned earlier, a lot of them are easy to avoid due to his speed, or the lack of it. For this battle, we recommend using a weapon that has quick thrusting attacks, and for us, that weapon should be the Trident, as it’s arguably the best weapon in the game, especially when using Dream materials to forge it.
The early part of the battle will be a mix of the Sweep Combo and Jumping Slam attacks. When he uses the latter, run behind him when he’s in the air and get a few attacks in (or a charged attack). Continue this until he begins incorporating his other attacks into the mix.
When his health drops between 1/2 and 3/4, he’ll start using his attacks more quickly, as well as bringing in the lightning attacks. Whenever you see him use the lightning attacks, get to the back arena and move side to side to avoid the incoming lightning bolts. By now, you would have seen most of what Thalmudak has to offer from an offensive viewpoint, but you may not have seen his teleports.
(1 of 3) As the battle comes to an end, Thalmudak will charge his sword with lightning energy.
Whenever you see a golden glow around him, a teleport will happen. Usually, this will be right in front of view, followed by an attack, however, he will use it to reposition around the arena. The simple rule of the thumb for the teleport is: If he glows, get ready to go (dodge).
As the battle gets closer to the end, Thalmudak will begin mixing up some attacks, mainly the Sweep Combo, having a jumping slam in it, or throwing the sword at you. Also, he’ll use his attacks more frequently. Be patient and only attack after an opening because you don’t want to trade attacks with him; he’ll win.
In general, you want to attack Thalmudak from the back, and this is achieved by dodging to his side/back during his jumping attacks, as this will give you enough time to get 2-3 regular attacks (using Trident) or a charged attack.
You can repeat this throughout the battle, and before long, he’ll be defeated. Note that he hits hard, and should you get hit, use a potion to heal; otherwise, the next attack could be your last. That’s it for Thalmudak. After you defeat him, you’ll end the Chapter and go to a new map.
