This is a quick and easy guide on how to defend in combat scenarios in Super Mario RPG. To defend an attack, you’ll need to time the perfect shield by pressing “A” at the perfect time. Defending attacks is super important in combat and will save your character from incoming damage and/or knockouts, so learning how to master the Defend mechanic is vital to your playthrough!

Defense Shield in Super Mario RPG¶

In concept, defending against an attack is pretty easy - all you need to do is hit on your joycon/controller when an enemy is attacking. However, you will need to time it perfectly to actually trigger the defense shield that negates the attack, and to do so you’ll want to press when the Exclamation mark comes up above your character’s head.

This can be tricky to hit at first, but with more and more encounters with different monsters, you’ll get used to their different attacks. For example, some enemies will have ranged attacks, and blocking them might not come as naturally as melee attacks. Practice is key here and the more you play and encounter enemies the more you’ll be able to time the perfect defense shield!
