You’ll be introduced to the game’s time system as soon as Coen leaves his house during the prologue, and the game isn’t going to sugar-coat things for you. You simply do not have enough time to do everything, and while most of quests and activities in the prologue are of dubious long-term benefit, this page will still cover everything available to you so you can make informed decisions about what to see and do in the prologue of The Blood of the Dawnwalker.

(1 of 3) When spending your time on quests, you generally want to ensure that you’re going to get something valuable in return - a skill book makes completing “Like Father, Like Son” enticing,

Prologue Quests and Return on Investment

There are generally a few things we look for when deciding what to spend our time on in The Blood of the Dawnwalker:

  • Unlocking future quests
  • Gaining the support of allies (usually also involves unlocking additional quests)
  • Eliminating or diminishing enemies
  • Gaining rewards (skill points, unique treasures, EXP)
  • Interesting lore/character development

Generally in that order. In other words, we’ve got limited time, so we’re after utility - our time expenditure should have some kind of ROI. All that said, spending time in the prologue usually has short-term benefits, at best. Some rewards are better than others, and it’s implied that some characters will die if you don’t intervene, but few, if any of these quests seem to have any meaningful effect after the prologue ends.

Some quests don’t have a time cost, and there’s no good reason not to complete these,

while others don’t expire when the prologue ends - might as well spend you time on quests that will expire soon rather than spending it digging up treasure.

Time-Free Quests and Activities

There are a few things you can do around "Laslea Glen" iconLaslea Glen that don’t consume any time, and as such, they’re obviously worth doing. These include the quests Enter Not, If A Tree Falls in a Forest… and **Dead Drop. No reason not to do them, even if the rewards are likely trivial.

Non-Expiring Quest and Activities

Quests and activities that don’t consume time aren’t worth fussing over now, but neither are those that don’t expire. For reasons which will become clear, NPC-based quests in Laslea Vale will become inaccessible after the prologue, but the Bandit Camp, the Buried Treasure and Into the Den will all remain available. That being the case, you shouldn’t use your precious time during the prologue on them - you can always come back and complete them later, if you care to.

Recommended Quests and Activities

Now that we’ve established our criteria, let’s look at all there is to see and do around Laslea Vale before the prologue. Eliminating the quests and activities that don’t consume time and the ones that will persist after the prologue from consideration, we’re left with nine quests, which can consume up to 13 TIME to complete. Obviously that’s not happening, so we’ll suggest the following quests:

Suggested Prologue Quest and Activities

Quest Time
Withering Away 2
"Page-Turner" iconPage-Turner 1
"Like Father, Like Son" iconLike Father, Like Son 1
Blasphemy 1
Deep Down 1
"Disturbed" iconDisturbed 1
"Someone Needs a Lesson" iconSomeone Needs a Lesson 1

Complete these quests in order. If the quest selection seems weird, keep in mind that some quests take their time costs out at weird phases of the quest ,and if you hit 8 time ticks before the quest ends… well, that’s your day. "Someone Needs a Lesson" iconSomeone Needs a Lesson isn’t hugely rewarding, but the time cost is at the end of the quest, so it’s pretty easy to slip in as a final activity. It’s also worth noting that "Page-Turner" iconPage-Turner is mostly just flavor, so if you don’t care about spending time with "Anca" iconAnca, you could always substitute it for Live Bait if you wish. Just make sure you do not help "Crina" iconCrina bury her grandson at the end of "Disturbed" iconDisturbed, as it’s mostly just a time waste, and if you play Live Bait, do not chase your siblings - another way to waste time without any benefit.

Below you’ll find all the quests we considered and their strengths and weaknesses as far how time-worthy we thought they were.

Withering Away

The closest thing to a main quest in the prologue, skipping this quest or botching the medicine will have fairly immediate story consequences, unlike most things in the prologue. You should complete it for that reason alone, but the 500 EXP you’ll get for it is also fairly enticing. The quest Page-Turner splits Withering Away in half and if you complete Withering Away you’ll also unlock "Like Father, Like Son" iconLike Father, Like Son.

"Esme" iconEsme's FateShow Spoiler

If you skip Withering Away or fail to brew the medicine correctly, Esme will die during Sacred Covenant. If you brew the medicine correctly, she will survive.

While objectively a waste of time, studying with Anca does give you the excuse to familiarize yourself with an important NPC.

Page-Turner

Mostly an excuse to flirt with Anca, this quest consumes 1 TIME and only yields 100 EXP, so if you don’t care for the optional, pointless interactions with a fairly important NPC, you might as well skip this.

Like Father, Like Son

One of the more compelling reasons to see Withering Away through is the effects doing so has on your family. This quest unlocks after you’ve completed Withering Away and consists almost entirely of a duel, then a chat with "Pieter" iconPieter. You’ll gain 100 EXP and a "Charge Manual" iconCharge Manual, which allows you to purchase the "Charge" iconCharge skill, making it one of the better ways to spend 1 TIME in the prologue.

“Blasphemy“ is an interesting quest as it has consequences, but you can also double dip by siding with Presmyl,

then tattling to Gemla.

Blasphemy

Another rare quest with actual consequences, albeit minor ones. For a mere 1 TIME cost you can earn 575 EXP by finding the culprit, and if you side with Premsyl he’ll give you a "Daylight Amulet" iconDaylight Amulet, while if you tell Gemla who robbed her she’ll give you 25 "Denarius" iconDenarius… or better yet, side with Premsyl, then rat him out to Gemla anyways to get 825 EXP and both individual rewards.

Gemla's FateShow Spoiler

If you skip Blasphemy or do not tell Gemla that Premsyl has the banner, she will be killed during Sacred Covenant. If you help her get the banner back, it will be displayed in the church during Sacred Covenant, instead.

“Deep Down“ give you a proper dungeon to explore, rewarding you with the Mireleaf Bracers,

and giving you a proper miniboss to fight.

Deep Down

Deep Down is one of the better loot quests in the prologue. You spend 1 TIME delving a cave, rescue "Lazar" iconLazar, fight a boss (and get random drops from said boss), and loot some master-quality (blue) bracers from a sarcophagus. Once that’s all done, you can turn the quest in for another 250 EXP and 50 Denarius. Is it essential? No. But you can waste your time doing worse.

Live Bait

Live Bait is a tough one. On one hand it’s a complete waste of time (you can burn an extra 1 TIME chasing your siblings), but on the other hand it’s by far the most interaction with said siblings you’re going to get early in the game. You’ll get to discuss family drama, learn about Coen’s less than stellar health and as a bonus get some humanization of the "Uriash" iconUriash at the end. Probably worthwhile to play through just to see the story, but from a ROI investment, you should skip this quest.

After fighting with or talking to Vasil, Atanas will show up, allowing you to punish Vasil,

or if you refuse, fight Atanas. It’s not the most glamorous or rewarding of quests, but its time cost does come at the end, which makes it a good closer.

Someone Needs a Lesson

An interesting story, but not a lucrative one. You can either beat up "Vasil" iconVasil or talk to him until his father, "Atanas" iconAtanas shows up. Either way, once Atanas intervenes you can refuse to punish Vasil further which provokes Atanas into some fisticuffs. Afterwards you can talk to Vasil about his abusive dad. As riveting as it all is, it costs 1 TIME and earns you 250 EXP, which makes it pretty basic as far as prologue quests go.

“Disturbed“ does allow you to learn more about Vladimir’s schemes early,

just don’t let Crina trick you into wasting time burying her son - those bones aren’t going anywhere.

Disturbed

A good story - who doesn’t like helping a bereaved widow? - and it introduces you to "Vladimir" iconVladimir and his schemes a bit earlier than the main plot will. Still, it’s 1 TIME cost to earn 250 EXP and 25 Denarius, which isn’t great. Plus Crina will try to get you to waste another 1 TIME burying her grandson again, which gains you nothing. Good lore, good story, fun quest, bad payoff.

On the less compelling end of the scale “On The Run” has you chasing down a wayward pig,

and the Sausages you get for butchering the pig are not worth the time cost.

On the Run

One of the more transparent wastes of time in the prologue. You can help "Iorgu" iconIorgu find his missing pig, which will set you back 2 TIME in exchange for 250 EXP and 50 Denarius. You can also accept 8x "Sausage" iconSausages as a reward for helping Iorgu butcher the pig.
