Winning the Seign Duel

Seign is an opponent that pops up during the Seperate Ways mission, and a new type of battle. Here you will learn the basics of taking part in a one-on-one fight with Nowa. Like the previous strategy battle, this one is a bit confusing as it’s hard to damage Seign enough to break him without depleting Nowa’s health bar too fast. The guide below explains the new duel system and how to complete the battle.

Seign and Nowa are forced to confront each other on the Eltisweiss bridge.

Beating Seign at The Eltisweiss Bridge

Once the army begins to invade Eltisweiss, you will be asked to set-up a party and start making your way to the bridge on the right side of town. If you’re low on health, bring Francesca to help heal your party. On your way to the bridge, you will be attacked by a group of six guards. They can hit hard, but don’t have high HP so go ahead and wipe them out as fast as possible. After this, your party will continue onto the bridge where you will encounter Seign. It’s not long before he and Nowa decide to face off one-on-one, and you’ll begin your first Duel.

You now only have three choices, attack, counter, and break. It may seem like attacking causes you to take more damage, but deal some damage to Seign, while Counter helps you take less damage, but result in you dealing little damage to Seign. Your goal is to swap back and forth between these two methods, doing so will build up the bar under Seign’s name and unlock the break option.

Duels work much like Rock-Paper-Scissors, in which you need to choose the right option based on what your opponent says, right before selecting your commands. Use the following commands to get through this battle:

Seign’s Comments Use
You need only lay down your weapon Attack
And I cannot convince you to walk away? Attack
Get ready, Nowa! Counter
Attack
If you continue to resist, I will hurt you! Counter

This should bring you to the first point, at which point, use the following commands:

Seign’s Comments Use
Try me! Attack
In the name of House Kesling, I will bring you in line! Counter
Here I come, Nowa! Counter

This will lead you to the final part of the battle, you can still choose the correct commands, but the duel is unwinnable.

Seign’s Comments Use
What about your friends up there? Attack
Still meddling I see, you haven’t change at all Attack
Fight harder, Nowa! Counter
(Nowa) I’ll never win if I stay on the defensive Attack

This is a rather fast fight, and the goal is mainly to build tension. When you eventually lose, the outcome is Nowa being rescued by his friends, and the scenes that follow will result in the group establishing their new Headquarters. A large amount of new characters will become available to recruit at this point.

This duel is NOT unwinnable. Nowa needs to seemingly be at least level 24 and follow very specific commands. Someone posted a guide on GameFaqs and a video on YouTube of Seign's defeat. You don't have to accept defeat. This duel is a callback to the original Suikoden "unwinnable" duel where you had to be at least level 35 to win.

Edit: I just confirmed it. I defeated Seign. It's about the tension meter. You need to be strong enough to withstand the battle and get your tension meter high enough to do enough damage to Seign when you do the breaks. So if it's not high enough when you do the breaks, or Seign's HP isn't low enough, continue fighting. Credit to Kayne0000 for figuring that out on a GameFAQs forum.

Yes, it requires a lot of grinding to win this duel, but it doesn't really change anything in the long run, so it's kind of pointless.
