Game Basics - How to Play Mina the Hollower
New Game Plus Explained
You will be able to use a number of different weapons in Mina the Hollower, although you end up getting stuck using a single one for a good chunk of the beginning of the game. Each of the weapons is different from the other, offering their own advantages and disadvantages. While it doesn’t matter in the long run, since you do eventually gain access to every single weapon in the game, you will want to make an informed decision on a weapon that suits your needs.
You get to choose one of three weapons at the beginning of the game.
Nightstar¶
The Nightstar is a mace that is affixed to a flexible chain, and is probably the best weapon for a beginning. That’s because it offers some range over the others, allowing you to keep a medium distance from enemies. It shoots straight and gives you more of a defensive advantage over all of the other weapons. However, it’s still a little slower than the daggers, so there might be times when you do take unnecessary damage, especially against multiple enemies.
Blaststrike Maul¶
Of the three starting weapons, the Blaststrike Maul is probably the most advanced and toughest to use. When you swing this weapon normally, you have a small hitbox, meaning you’ll have to get fairly close to an enemy to hit them. However, the magic happens when you hold the attack button, as Mina will charge the maul and then deliver a bigger hit with the whole weapon. While you’re charging, you can dodge by pressing the analog stick in any direction, giving you a bit more maneuverability. You want to utilize the charged strike as much as possible, as that is where the damage will come from with this weapon.
Whisper and Vesper¶
The last of the three starting weapons, the Whisper and Vesper are a pair of daggers. They are quite quick and that’s their greatest strength, since you can get a lot of attacks out with them. Of course, they might not deal as much damage as the other weapons, or offer some of their unique advantages.
More weapons will become available to you as you play through the game.
Which Weapon Should You Pick?¶
Someone who isn’t the best at these kinds of games should probably pick the Nightstar as their beginning weapon, since it’s the friendliest due to its range. If you want to go a little more advanced, then the Whisper and Vesper daggers are your best bet. The most advanced out of the three starters is the Blaststrike Maul, since the big damage comes from its charge mechanic. It should be noted that if you grind Bones, the in-game currency, you can purchase the other weapons from a shop in the main town. Of course, these are quite expensive, so it’s not the most viable solution, and you can still only use a single weapon at a time (can switch them via your Underlab base).
Another thing to talk about really quickly is you’ll find a Whisper and Vesper in a chest at the first major dungeon. If you chose this weapon at the start, then this will be an upgrade and unlock a special move. Otherwise, it’ll give you another weapon to play with whenever you feel like you need a change.
